Bangai Cardinals Rock the Cradle of Love
I've had a couple of Bangai's mating for a couple of weeks now. I took some video of the behavior in case anyone is interested. The femail picks the male and initiates the ritual. She sides up to the mail quivering. The male responds by twitching the longest dorsel and anel fins in her direction at the same time. The female is vicious in chasing away any other Bangais. They've spawned once but no babies survived.
I filmed this when Rock the Cradle of Love was playing from Billy Idol and believe it or not it was just a coincidence. |

And here's the result an hour later. The male has a mouth full of babies. I've got to run around tomorrow looking for a long spiny urchin because I can't catch him to get him out.
Here's the video. Be careful or she'll stuff a bunch of babies in your mouth. |

Nice videos! My pair is courting again tonight too.
Don't bother getting a real urchin. You can make a fake one out of a ball of epoxy and some black plastic zipties. It works just as well as a real urchin, but doesn't move around and knock stuff over. No danger of getting poked either! Did your male hold to full term last time or did he swallow the eggs?

The onyx I got from you jumped into the overflow a couple days ago. I don't know what's up with those clowns but I guess they like to jump.

The male didn't hold to term the first time. I ran out and bought an urchin today. I thought about making a fake but I just don't have the time. I also ran out and bought a bottle of vinegar in case I get poked. We'll see what happens. The male is still mouth full.
