Clams under T5's?

I've got a 6 light Nova Extreme T5 fixture and I was curious if that would be enough light to support a clam?

No idea here, but I'm guessing the first question is going to be what size tank? Followed by what type of bulbs.

That depends on how far the clam is from the lights. But, if you run high PAR bulbs it can support clams kept up in the rocks high in the tank, or if it is a shallow tank perhaps a dersa in the sand.
I have 3 clams (maxima, crocea, and dersa) under under T5's from rocks to sand, but they are on individual reflectors and over driven.

It's a 75 gallon with the following T5's:

UVL Super Actinic
ATI Blue Plus
UVL Aquasun
ATI Aquablue
ATI Blue Plus

you could get a dersea clam i have one under a 4 bulb t5 and its living large they say the maxima need alot of light

Define A Lot? I have a maxima under only a 4 Bulb T5 about 10 Inches Away 5 to 6 of that being Water, and All in all my Clam is Fine does great and reacts anytime anything is around. I also maintain about 5 Gallons of water changed every other day or so. Tanks is 110 Gallon

I'm not sure that the nova extremes are that good of fixtures, but I think you keep one like mentioned previously. You do have good bulbs which is always a plus!

i was goin on what alot of people say. the dersea is my first clam i want a maxima but since yours is doing good i might have to get me one thanks

I have kept croceas for 4+ years in a 75 gallon with 216W (4 t5's) on the sand bed..I think you will be fine..pics of my clams in my profile..one just recently died no idea why after so long, but I did have it like I said for over 4 years so doubtful was the lighting..

I've had a maxima for quite a while about 1/2 way down under T5s and they are NEP
s as well. For all the complaining I hear about them. my only complaint is their mounting legs and not their light.

Hoping he does as well under the LEDS now..

That's good to hear. The blue Maxima's are my favorite.

You can put the Derasa on the sandbed. As for Crocea and Maxima, I would put them on your LRs a little higher up. I have the NEP with 6 UVL bulbs. Both of my Maximas are attached to LRs on the bottom of the tank.

Just some followup..

I got my 2" blue maxima and it's under a 6 bulb Nova Extreme Pro T5 fixture. The bulbs equate to 324 Watts.

From all my searching across the various forums seems people have had pretty good luck with keeping them under T5's if placed high enough in the rock.

I'll try to remember to update this thread as there seems to be plenty of interest in maxima's under T5's.

You can keep anything under ho t5s with knowledge of when everything looks healthy try it everyone has their own opinions I say go for it. Just place a high as possible and feed

I have two large Derasa clams on my sand bed under 6 T5. They are doing great.

I have a crocea under 5 T5s in a 90 and it doesn't like being all that high up. I have it just a few inches above the sand and its very happy. I don't think a maxima is any more light needy than a crocea. I'm looking for a maxima myself.

Currently I only have 4 T5 bulbs on my 120. The plan is to get a LED setup to add to the 4 T5 bulbs. I figure once I get that going I might be in good shape to add a clam or two. I'm just curious though about how mature the tank should be? Also, do you need to feed clams? Any good threads or info for someone new to clams?

you will be fine under th T5s, as stated above, choose where to place the clam to suits its lifestyle and make sure it get full exposure to the light.

I have grown maximas, croceas and derasas under T5s. My maximas are close to 6 years old now and pushing 10 inches across.

Just some more followup...

The clam seems to have attached to the rock I have it on finally.

I had the rock on the sandbed, but decided to move it about halfway up the rockwork to get it more light.

All seems to be going well.

I can see a white edge on the shell around the clams mantle. I assume that is new growth of the shell?

Thought I'd followup one more time.

I have the clam for about 3 weeks now.

It seems happy so far.

I'm not sure if clams are finicky enough to where if it was struggling that I would see obvious signs.

It's halfway up the rock and always fully opens and has good reaction time when it senses something close or light changes.
