Lace Rock - base rock

My LFS has what they call Lace Rock that they suggest for base rock - they also have some very nice Fancy live rock. To use the Lace rock they suggest boiling it for 5 minutes in RO water. It's nice looking base rock mostly flat pieces with lots of interesting texture. If it was ever in the ocean it was a long long time ago - it may have come from Utah, at least thats what the sales guy said and yes they do use it in their tanks, you can see it.

I have some concerns:

1 - will boiling it for 5 min but sufficent to do what ever needs to be done?

2 - thee is a golden algae growing on the rock - should I be concerned about that? Maybe scraping it off - the guy wasn't sure. The owner wasn't around when I was looking.

the yellow stuff is liken , it is a fungus that grows on it in the ground . most lace rock is taken out of a quarry in UT,CO . first thing i would do is power wash it with water only NO SOAP then you cure it . boiling is waste of time in most cases because it kill anything on it but wont remove it. if it is dry power washing is enough.

IMO the boiling with RO/DI water is better than power washing with tap water

So, I don't have a power washer - do you think the bowiling will kill the Liken? Will there be other issues if it's not scraped off -

As you can tell, I've had issues with algae before and don't want to feed any more from to much organic stuff..

So boil it, scrub it, then rinse it.
