more tang arguments
okay, I am not advising a school of tangs in a 55 gallon, but I have had a Regal yellow belly in my 55 for 4 years, and she is fat and healthy. She is a tiny and she is just fine. {offensive language removed} and I firmly believe in not overstocking a tank, because needlessly killing fish is wrong, but on the other side of the coin is the fact that it is YOUR fish tank. If you want to keep a tang in a 55 gallon go ahead and do it, but be advised you may have to move them to a bigger tank. My boyfriend has 3 tangs (regal, yellow, and vlamingi) in a 125 for over 3 years and they are fat, and healthy no disease. Disease is a sign of stress, and a tang if not happy with their environment would get stressed. I believe yes it can be done, no it should not be done as a beginner.

okay so I am sorry that is not an acceptable term. But I just do not think that you should say that a tang cannot be kept in a certain size tank. Some tank sizes I agree with, but the aquarium industry would not make tiny tangs if they were not trying to make them more marketable to people that do not have tanks that are 300 plus gallons. I am not trying to offend anyone on here, but I do think that telling people they can;t put a tang in a tank that is 55 or bigger is wrong. If they want to do it let them, if it dies it is not your fault.
I have never had a problem with it and my tangs swim all around the tank all the time. they do not just sit in one spot, they just happen to get fed a lot. Yes the vlamingi is outgrowing his tank, and yes we are looking for a new home, but in North Dakota finding a new home is not always easy. I look out for the best of my fish and if I think that the tank is too small I will move them out of it. Again sorry to offend anyone, but just lay off people a little. I understand you are looking out and trying to prevent an unneedable death and trying to make the person see that their fish might die. We need people in this hobby to keep people in line, but please do not impose your full opinion on people, because sometimes we are only looking for simple advice such as "oh, I dont know that seems a bit small, I would not do it." Rather than "omg you should not do that your fish is going to die" Thanks |

This is just bad advice, and your tangs sound far from healthy.

x2, Bertoni.
Fatty liver. Early death. Under-oxygenated. And raising fish after fish to a bad start and selling the damaged fish on to some other unsuspecting hobbyist is not a good thing. A store has only one motive in selling a regal tang to somebody with a 30 gallon tank: they want to sell that person a 300 gallon tank next year. They can always hope.

I really do not care what you think about how I keep my tangs. When my fish are just fine and they live in their tank swim around and eat and have no disease. It is my opinion and I will do as I like. If you think my fish are not happy that is fine I do not care. I enjoy my fish and do the best for them that I can. I will keep my fish in the tanks that I see fit.

If only fish could talk! They could tell us if they are happy or not. I am in the middle of this argument. Yes I tihnk it is cruel to put a naso in a 55 or anyother tang for that matter, but fish don't have feelings. They arn't happy, sad, or anything of that matter. They are either eating and growing health fish or stressed and sick. So therefore if the fish is thrieving in a 125 than its fine. I think like everything in our great country (I mean that becasue we can have opinions) there is the right wing and the left. Just my opinionand you have your right to yours! Thanks

If you don't care what we think about your tank arrangements, why even post this thread?

This "opinion" is not shared by 99.9% of your fellow hobbyist. Opinions don't work that way...Example: You can have an opinion about who will win the Superbowl. That is valid. You cannot have an opinion that the world is flat. That's not an opinion, that's living in an alternate reality.
Please read more about recommended tank sizes for Tangs. Not just here... any reef/marine forum will tell you the same, as will books, and other legitimate hobby publications. Not sure why you would expect more acceptance from RC readers? It is upsetting to most of us to hear about any sort of animal mistreatment. No one can stop you from doing what you're going to do, but if you don't want to hear everybody try to make you change your mind, it's better to not bring it up in the first place. Otherwise, it just looks like you're picking a fight for the sake of fighting. |

Some people are just missing the point. Just because it is alive and disease free, does not make it right. If a fish is not growing at a normal rate, it is not healthy. The same way it would not be right to keep a greyhound in an apartment with no running room. It is up to the hobbyist to supply a proper environment for any of the species they wish to keep. It is simply selfish, irresponsible and ignorant to ignore the science and mountains of evidence available because you want to to keep a certain fish.

Yea cause most lfs not all just want to make money and will sell anything to make that buck. its up to the hobbyist to be responsible and know that a certain fish needs more room. if you have a small tank get to know what species of fish you can keep instead of the size of it. |

What people on here are concerned about is two things, mainly: 1. Avoiding the equivalent of having a puppy crated 24 hours / day and 2. Having tons of people keep tangs in tanks that are far to small to sustain them, and kill them off, then replacing them, continuously going through this cycle. This depletes the populations of tangs found in the wild and makes it more difficult and expensive for responsible keepers to find specimens.

it is annoying that everytime i come on this site that someone is saying something to another. yes people are entitles to their opinion. like i am. so i agree that tangs are for much bigger tanks even for the smallest ones. the reason i agree is because i understand that some fish have needs. its not because we think it would be nice. it's because they need the room. as for you understaning what the people have said will NOT happen because you already have it in your head that your fish is fine, and thats ok. untill you take the time to completly understand why the people who have been in the hobby for a long time say what they say you will have this same view. im sorry for your fish and any you plan to have later. Matt

I have a Blue Hippo in a 75 gallon. I got him from someone that had him for 12 years in their 75 gallon they were tearing down. This was five years ago so he is now 17+ years old. He is small at only 6 inches but he eats and seems happy but thats tough to tell since I'm not a fish shrink. Would I put another one in my 75 probably not but I was trying to prevent this guy from just getting rid of the fish. But I have to say 17 years is a long time for a fish to live that shouldn't be in a tank that size so I have to question that a little. My guess is there are not a lot of 17 year old fish out there.
