Melafix marine/ Pimafix
Hi there,
I have had a 120g with 30g sump up and running since april (upgrade from 90g) I started using Prodibio for the last 5 weeks with no ill effect. within the last 2 days my mated clownfish have deteriorated incredibly. Not certain if it is ich or something else and will try to post pics. One eye is bulging and has white fluff fins are rotting etc. Same thing happened to a firefish and it died but this was about a month ago. They are IMPOSSIBLE to catch without destroying the tank (we've tried on many occasions and the tank was emptied to do so) Is Melafix/ pimafix used together a good option? I've heard both good and bad things happening using these products. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!! |

The one with the bulging eye wont come out of the torch long enough to get a good pic.

I would try harder to get them out, i would not treat the DT with those products. I am pretty sure that they will not be good for all the other inhabitants in your tank. I treated one of my sick clowns with Melafix, it did not help it. I use to use it on my freshwater fish and worked good, not sure it is as effective on SW. best let someone with more experience chime in.

They need to be treated in a hospital tank. One possibility is brooklynella hostilis (google same) which attacks primarily clownfish, and the other is marine velvet (google same) which has a broader range. Look up both, diagnose, then go to our Fish Diseases forum for advice.

Sk8r, thanks for the possible diagnoses, it might be brook or ich (looks more like fluff than mucus)
I don't have a QT tank so I dosed Melafix last night but by reading here it's a waste of time and should QT all the fish an start hyposalinity for 6 weeks to stop the ich cycle. Can I do this with a brand new completely clean QT? Or can I still start it up with some of the DT water? It would be a 25gal eclipse because that's all I have on hand. Am I correct in thinking that I would not be using carbon filter during the treatment? Thanks again for the input. |
