Recirculation Pump for 150 cube Suggestions?

I'm setting up a Marineland 150 Deep Dimension cube on the Monteray stand.
Basically a reef tank with a few fish.

The head pressure will be in the 4' 5" range at most (internal height of the Monteray stand is only about 23" plus the 27" lift needed to get to the main tank output.

I used the Iwaki back in 1980's and have been out of the hobby since 1994.

I'm thinking that 15 times turnover rate would be my target - open to suggestions! I found in the past that a lot of flow in the tank is ideal. I will also have one Vortech 40w ES in the tank, and will add a second if needed.

Of course, silent operation and low electrical usage is a requirement.

Thus, guidance needed:
Internal or external?
Thinking external because I want to completely avoid the need for a chiller. I spend the extra bucks on AI Sol Blue lamps for just that reason and need to avoid any device that would add a significant heat factor to the tanks temperature.

Pump brand and model suggestions?
Looking at the Reeflow Dart. However, I'm finding a lot of outlets that are showing this pump as discontinued - is Reeflow still in business. Open to alternative brands.

I would definitely go with another vortec and calm down your flow from ten to fifteen and just go with three to five goal. Blue line makes an excellent pump and I would recommend them cheaper then iwaki and easier to deal with

I just spent some time measuring the interior space of the stand - think you are right.

Seems difficult to get all of the gear I want in there: Sump with my BK 180 v2, AquaMedic 1000 Calcium Reactor. Then a osmolator, external pump, Kalkwasser reactor and who knows what else I'll come up with down the road.

MarineLand stand is nice but restrictions of interior stands space for a cube tank can be challenging. Interior is 33 1/4 x 33 1/4 x 25 high. Also, the side panel of the stand can be removed BUT it slide on a horizontal axis in the back direction toward the wall. Now, that design was brain dead once the tank is set up and running, unless you want to knock a whole in the wall behind the tank to slide the panel off!

Looks like a refuge of adequate size to be of any real benefit to my 150 gallons is just not going to fit, considering other gears space requirements.

I agree with you 100%. The DD tanks are awesome. But their stands are horrible. I ended going with a custom tank and stand for about the same price as the 300DD. I got a 42inch steel stand wick will bring the tank up to eye level and give me all the room I need inside the sump area. Only thing is I will have to skirt it in wood myself as that save me $1,000 but I have decent wood working skills and tools. There are other options out there for you as a 23inch stand is crap.

But keep this in mind as the main reason I think their stands are 23 inches is to get them thru doors. I have to remove my slidding glass door to get the stand in the house

Finally found a sump that will fit and leave room for reactors I plan on using; Eshopps 200 model.

Now, due to space restrictions I've decided to go with a submersible pump.
Who makes the Rolls Royce of sub pumps?

Figure I'd like to get 5 turn overs or more and have purchased a Vortech 40w ES to get in-tank circulation up to speed.

Guess I should have said the Mercedes of pumps?

That's more money than I want to put into one - How about the Water Blaster HY5000 or even the 3000?

The Marineland 150 gal DD tank only has one x one inch return and they rate their overflow capacity at 700 gph - thus my thinking that the 3000 would meet my needs and be about 1/2 as hungry on the electrical usage as the 5000.

I'm wondering if the 3000 wound not be enough, BUT I do need to run part of the output into several reactors I plan on adding over time.

I have one Vortech 40w ES and will probably add a second later, thus tank circulation will be more than taken care of by the Vortech's. Just need sump pump to feed flow to my BK 180, v2.

Jack- Iwas interested in the Water Blaster pumps myself.There is a good thread on them in the Reef Specialty forum http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1824352
or give them a call,I have found they are great guys to do business with.

I use a mag 9.5 and have never needed a chiller, you could even go to a mag 7 and still be ok for flow(though these are the Honda of pumps-cheap and reliable)

Definetly would recommend two mp40's for flow, especially if you're planning on sps

An eheim 1262 would be just what you are looking for, stay away from the mags, not as reliable as the eheims.

Mag 7 I have been using these pump for a long time, I don't clean them ( no need in my case) I opened one after a year 1/2 of use, the interior was almost perfect. They are very reliable. my tanks stays in the 79 80 F range. Good luck.

I have the 70 gallon DD tank...I run an ehiem 1262 on it's return, it makes me happy.

As far as the side stand panels go...they're not intended to slide...you have to lift them up then pull the bottom of the panel out of the track...does that make sense? Think of it like a tilt out window in a home?

Yup, I figured that out - sure would have been nice if they put something about that feature in the docs that came with the tank.

I'm wrestling between the Water Blaster or the Eheim 1262.

The thead you suggested on the WB had quite a few posts in it that took some of my initial interest in it away. Eheim seems to be more reliable BUT it's shaft can calcify over time.

More input/research needed.

Jack-I am using a Ehiem 1260 for my chiller,I think it is O.K.,if I was to nit pick they are kinda large,so-so on energy consumption,and fairly quiet.It is very reliable though..If I can sell it I am going to try a Tunze recirc. pump.

Funny, b/c I have the Tunze recirc. (Silence 1073.04) for my return and have been thinking about trying an Eheim 1260. My only complaint on the Tunze is the noise. It's not loud, but not silent either like most of their other pumps. It's excellent on energy usage though.

I went with the Water Blaster 5000 - should arrive this afternoon.
Will be interesting to see how it works out.
