Ev-180 Skimmer Qs: Water height and space required above it?
I will probably be getting an EV-180 skimmer soon.
I am in the process of designing my sump and stand. I need to know how many inches of water the skimmer needs to sit in, and how much space is needed above the skimmer to make for easy maintenance. The skimmer is 20" tall according to specs. thanks in advance |

You don't need alot of space above. The collection cup just twists and comes off. You could probably get it out with only an inch space. But you will need to clean the neck periodically so allow for that as well.
As for water height, you want the sump water level right at the lower lip of the gatevalve outlet on the skimmer body. You should consider ditching the gatevalve and replace with a 90deg elbow turned downward into the water and drilled with a ~1/4" hole on the top over the down-facing opening. Hopefully you're running a Mag 9 or equiv pump. I've been running an EV-180 on my 90gal system for about 3yrs. Solid, reliable system. |
