The 24 Gallon Nano lives again……

After much debate and thought I have decided that I have met my match in tank size limit. For several months now I have been questioning why I ever thought going bigger was going to be better. At the time I didn’t give much thought to all the additional cost, time, and water change quantities.

After the semi crash about a month ago in which I lost many of my SPS’s I have decided a down size is in order. Due to my lack of time to dedicate to appropriate water changes in a timely fashion and poor sump design I brought it on myself. And with one full time job and two part time jobs I don’t see any of my time being freed up any time soon. During this time I found myself having more frequent conversations with my husband about possibly getting out because I was so bummed about the loss and my lack of time to care for the tank that he reminded me how much I enjoyed the Nano and how it was easier for me to handle the buckets for water changes on my own. So in due time I will be parting ways with the Tech and returning to the Nano.

A few weeks ago Dan brought the Nano out of storage for me and I started doing my homework on RC and other sites on how create a setup that would mimic my tech but with a better sump design. Instead of running it as an AIO, I decided to have it drilled.

From all the feedback on the forum I contacted Tom and discussed my plans with him and her came over and drilled it for a 1” drain and ¾” return and he made me a really awesome overflow box as well. Thanks Tom (runningnreefing)

Sump: I picked up a 15 gallon 24”x 12”x12” sump from a LFS. The sump will sit perpendicular to the tank in the sump. It will stick out about 6 inched in the back of the stand. I built a little sturdy platform with reinforced metal L brackets on the leg then stained it to match the stand. To test it Dan stood on it and it held so I think it will hold the content of a sump. I can access the front through the glass door this will be the refugium end with the light.
I had found a plan for a sump off of Meleve’s page or was it a design someone built using one of his designs. I saved a copy of the photo in my desktop file from last year so I resized it to fit the dimensions of my sump tank. The design made scene in the flow pattern to allow for ample room for a filter sock, skimmer, refugium and return. Lesson learned from old setup is not to put sand in the sump, to include a filter sock mount (I built this one out of plexi).

Aquascaping: Because I will be losing a lot of real estate ground when compared to my Tech I decided to utilized the Foam wall method. I pulled about 15lbs (total) of LR pieces from the sump and a few from the display and dried them for a few day them sprayed them with the power washer. Doing this outside in the snow was not fun. I used about 85-90% dried rock then filled the cracks with Beckett Foam Sealant. After letting that cure for 3 days I then sealed it with Bob Smith Finish Cure sprinkling it with dry sand ……anyways you get the point the whole process and steps can be found in the DIY forum under Pond Foam wall.
To adhere this to the back of the tank I order 8 epoxy coat earth magnets that each pull 15lbs and embedded them in the foam when I was constructing the piece. I figured this would make it a thousand times easier than the standard epoxy it to the back wall to remove if there be a problem or I later change my mind about the aquascaping.

The big void is where my Mp 20 will go to provide more water movment in the tank.

I plan to add another 20-30 lbs of live rock that I will pull from the Tech to the nano display once the cycle gets started and another 15-20 in the sump.

Lighting: I have on order and Aqua illumination Sol Blue for the lighting as the MH I run on it before I have since sold and always ran the temp up. I’ve read tons of reviews on their PAR and feedback and they seem very promising. Expecting it to ship from PA after the New Year. But no hurry as I have to let the nano tank cycle and then comes the breakdown and transfer of the Tech

Skimmer: After the initial operator error with my new Precision Marine 100 Redline skimmer I am very happy with it skimming ability. It is currently set up on the Tech and it a skimming beast. I would go as far to say it is doing as good of a job as my Octopus 150 does just with a much smaller footprint.

WOW yes WOW I just picked up a 29 gal biocube last night to move my 14 gal to and I just fell in love that looks awesome. I will have to attempt that myself for the 29 any tips you can give? also where did you pick up the foam at?

I had to order my Becketts Pond Foam on line (amazon) as it is currently out of season at the big box home improvment stores.

The epoxy (Bob Smith 20 min. Finish Cure) I also ordered online. One 13 oz bottle will be plenty as I ordered one 13oz and a 4 oz bottle and that 4 oz easly covered the front with about 1.5 oz left over in the bottle. So one 13 oz will be way more than enought to coat the front and the back.

I unfortunally didn't take that many pictures during the foaming stages or expoxy process due to the mess and not wanting to mess up the camera. But I did not zip tie my rocks down.

Cut open a garbage bag and lay it down in a place where you wont have to move it for 36-48 hours. Lay your precut/measure eggcrate on top. Then start laying out your rocks onto of the eggcrate. When you have finalized your lay out. Place your earth magnets in the gaps laying flush on the egg crate then start spraying the foam around the rocks.

Using the nozzle to spray in the crakes and from the underside. Use a small amount at first as it exspands quite a bit to figure out the exspansion size you like. When it exspands and dries the rocks and magnets will be held in place.
If you want it less bubbly you can press it down when the surface is no longer sticky to press out some of the air making it less buoyant.
When fully dry the trash bag will pull off the back leaving a flat surface. For my overflow box I just wrap cd cased in parcment paper to the thickness I needed to make as a place holder while sizing up the rocks and spraying the foam.

I will post more pics later tonight of the finished front.

Man my back hurts and I am tired but on a positive note...the 70 Tech is completly broken down, corals and Live stock are in the holding tub and the nano is 2 gallons away from being completly full. Time for photos

Each to their own...lol. He has been very patiente have to live in this fish disaster for the last three weeks. Its about the only place he can go where their isn't fish related stuff strun everywhere. But tommorrow is cleanup day...hopefully :/

Things that make you go hummmm..
Looking things over and I don't know why I didn't catch it earlier but I just realized that I Krylon painted a piece of the pvc connections that is currently under water in the sump. Fortunatly its a piece that hasn't been glued in place. I would just have to buy a new union joint and a thread female piece to swap it out for an up painted piece then wait another 24 hours for the glue to dry.

Is this worth the trouble redoing the piece or do you think it will be okay? The paint cured for over a week.

Well seeing people who paint pvc black all the time in the tank itself as long as its the tank safe stuff I dont see an issue..... but I also wouldnt listen to me lol.

Four days into my cycle with 15 lbs of dead rock and about 30+ in LR with a Nitrate reading tonight of 20ppm.
Live stock and coral in holding tube are doing well. Have the protein skimmer in the tub too.

I did recieve my Aquaillumination light this evening. I only got to play around with it for about 1/2 hour before I had to get on to other things but from what I seen I looks really cool. The thurderstorm feature is wicked.

Any other opinions on the black painted PVC piece being in the water?

The painted PVC piece should be fine....if the paint starts to chip off or fade then i would change it out....thats my 2 cents on that. and the thunderstorm feature sounds cool!!!! i would def like to see that!

I dont know about the paint but the pvc glue sets in ten minutes.

If you use Krylon Fusion paint for the PVC just wait 7 days for it to FULLY cure and you will be good to go. A lot of people put it in when it's dry after 24 hours and it will start to chip quickly. 7 days=No Chipping.

So far the lighting is great. I have noticed some growth in the SPS already and all corals have colore up very nicely.
I have gradually increased the percentage for 25% W to 45% W over the course of the last few weeks. Increased the B/RB from 30% to 55%

Schedule for lighting:
T1: 9am W4% B---- RB--- No moon Ramp of 60min
T2: 1pm W35% B43% RB 45% No moon Ramp of 80min
T3: 4pm W40% B55% RB 50% No moon Ramp of 90min
T4: 8pm W15% B8% RB8% No moon Ramp down of 100min
T5: 11:00pm W2% B3% RB3% No moon Ramp down 5min
T6: 11:15pm Moon Cycle Same percentages listed for 11pm.
