15gal Nano setup
ok so i am not new to reef tanks, but i am new to Nano tanks... I am starting my first Nano tank monday.
Tank: 15gal Filtration: Cascade 500 Canister Filter, and a Subcurrent Internal wet/dry filter Lighting: Odyssea 20" 72w(4X18w) T5 HO fixture Lights:2X Super Actinic 420nm by UV Lighting Company, and 2X Actinic White 12k by UV Lighting Company Base: 20lbs #1 dry crushed coral Live Rock: 25lbs of Fiji Premium Any advice i might need to know about keeping Nanos? Right now i have 180gal reef tank, 135gal reef tank, 100gal marine only, and a 65gal reef tank. Figured the best thing to do was ask other Nano keepers for there input. this tank is going to be mainly a Zoanthid's, euphillias(torch and hammerhead), and maybe a Plate coral tank, with very few fish... maybe a Yellowhead jaw fish, and 2 clowns. Again thanks for any advice you guys might throw my way... |

Personally, I would nix the canister filter. Drill the tank and plumb it into a sump. Or at the very least use a HOB filter like one of the Aquaclear filters. Also I would look for a lighting fixture other than the Odyssea. They're junk.

Sounds to me like your off to a good start. Filtration is in place, lighting should be ample for what your planning on doing. Only question would be what's your plan as far as flow?

the sub current filter has a dual adjustable outlet, and i planned to do the same with the Cascade filter outlet. that way i could adjust my flow. as for the Odyssea lighting. I have 18 of these fixtures 14 freshwater, and 4 saltwater w/MH. I have had great luck with these lights, only problem with them is the lights them self are no good. I always replace them with med to high end lights... and why should i nix the canister filter?

Canister filters are junk. Especially in reef applications. Also ditch the crushed coral for your substrate. Crushed coral can become a nitrate factory in time. If you're looking for more advice on your nano plans you may want to check out Nano-Reef.com.

wow never had that problem with crushed coral in my other 4 reef tanks, but they are much bigger... also have never had any problems with canister filters on my 65gal reef tank.. I like them because of the options of media i can add at any given time... kinda wish i would have had this information this morning... As the tank is already cycling as of 10am this morning... ummm well i guess i can retro-fit a Aquaclear 50 in substitute of the cascade 500...
