Instant Ocean is the most studied and refined salt mix on the market and I use and recommend it.

I tried it and did not like it due to the residue it left in my WC vessel.
It contains vitamins and some other additives that I don't feel I need.

I have used Oceanic for years. It is a good reef salt, high in calcium, as opposed to a FOWLR salt.

Salinity 1.024-6; alkalinity 8.3-9.3 on KH scale; calcium 420; magnesium 1300, temp 78-80, nitrate .2. Ammonia 0. No filters: lps tank. Alk and cal won't rise if mg is low.

Current Tank Info: 105g AquaVim wedge, yellow tang, sailfin blenny, royal gramma, ocellaris clown pair, yellow watchman, 100 microceriths, 25 tiny hermits, a 4" conch, 1" nassarius, recovering from 2 year hiatus with daily water change of 10%.

Oceanic was the first salt I used, and for some reason, I always battled algae while using it.

Well, I tried everything to grapple it, GFO reactor, cutting lighting, cutting feeding in about half, water changes twice as often.

I bought a bucket of reef crystals, and it all cleared up after 2 weeks. Weirdly enough, I finished the bucket of oceanic after that, and the algae came back.

Perhaps I got a bad bucket or something, but I don't think I'll venture back towards oceanic salt.

thats interesting i havent really had too much problem with algae from mine cept for the cyano bullharky that is slowly taking over my tank, but beside the point lol. my LFS recommended the reef crystals n i think im guna move to that after this bucket of oceanic n see what its about

I have been using Corallife for 6 years now and have had no problems. Sometimes use Instant Ocean if it is ceaper at the local Petsmart.

Of coruse the main reason to use Coralife is the free t-shirt!!!! I have about 30 of them.

Coralife also puts the salt in 3 bags, so the unused salt doesn't stick together, needing a jack hammer later to use it.

My .02.

Right now I'm using Red Sea Reef Salt but it takes forever to dissolve so I'll probably go back to Reef Crystals.

Instant ocean generally- sometimes reef crystals. I do have a couple off site tanks that I use tropic marine reef on. For some reason those two tanks do better on it than anything else.

I've used Oceanic, Reef Crystals and Brightwells salts in my tank. I noticed no difference between the more expensive Brightwells and the el cheapo Reef Crystals salts in my tank. I buy RC as my go to salt, but will buy most anything if they're out.

Meekz,

Are you using the new formula of Red Sea Coral Pro in the black bucket or the old formula in the white bucket?

My LFS refused to make the switch to the black bucket formula because of the really high alk numbers. I have about a half bucket of the 'white' formula left and I don't know what to switch to when it's gone.

Hey thanks I had to print it out to compare all the results.

I use instant ocean reef crystals and I'm happy with it so far.

my last few batches of IO wear bad so i have been trying all different ones. so far I have found redsea, oceanic and coralife to give good numbers for little $. right now i am trying petco brand salt(its low on the big 3) my next salt to try is kent. It is hard to find one that is hi in MAG and does not cost a million dollars
