new rock hitchhiker

Can anyone help me identify some of the stuff that came with this piece of rock. their looks to be several species of sponge and some sort of bulbous white stuff on it, looks like a sponge but its white? There appears to be some Halmeida growing out of it. I'd post a pic but it keeps saying its to large but the pic is taken with my iphone

You nailed the halimeda. The orange stuff is some type of sponge. The stuff on the right of the right picture looks like some type of encrusting coral, but not sure.

Sponge can be all sorts of colors - including white. Some of it can take over you entire tank and some stay small and make nice converstation pieces. Halimeda most likely won't last long. A lot of herbivore fish eat it. Depending on how the rock was handled, most like the sponge won't last either - it usually doesn't survive being exposed to air (rots from the inside).

Good luck!

the LFS guy says that this rock is coming from the keys. He says that it comes from the ocean to the store in less than 24hrs. I live in the western mtns of north carolina, it seems a little far fetched to me, but what do you guys think?

When he said it comes from the Keys, I hope he meant an aquaculture farm.

Halimeda is a calciferous macro which means it won't be eaten by fish, snails, etc. It will absorb nitrates - and calcium. Worth having overall, just read up on what "going sexual" is so you know the signs to look for and what to do.

OUCH!! I've never seen LR for more than $8.99 a lb., but usually around $6.99. Purty rock, tho. yes, those are some type of sponges, & they come in many colors. I have some light blue ones that occassionally pop up in my tank.
