I have this awesome rock (IMHO, of course) that is perfectly egg-shaped and I'm trying to think of something really unique and amazing to do with it. I was thinking either cover with zoas, or maybe put something encrusting on top and let it grow down, I'm not sure.
Here is a pic, rock on far left, please excuse my tiny corals as I'm only a few months into this hobby: ![]() |

Depends really on the type of corals you want to keep, imo... I see some softies, lps, gorgonian, and other really nice corals in there... I would have a stag on top, perhaps a baby blue stag on top, branching up and out. I would maybe place an efflo out to the rightside top 1/3 rock, growing towards the light(soli would be sweet)... You have room to then place a plating type coral maybe bottom 1/3 down to the middle left, growing towards the left corner(Orange plating monti/tyree purple rim/green, etc...). On the bottom part of the rock, allow zoos to grow up the entire rock, filling in places of non-shading... Just a thought....

Thanks for the replies!
plyle02, cool sounding idea, even if I don't use the exact corals you mentioned, it does give me a new way of thinking. Sounds like it would be a nice little island coral tower thing. ctripi, I was wanting to cut it in half, but my wife bought the rock and didn't seem very open to me busting up her rock ![]() unbreakable, lol, I might do that in the meantime til I figure out what I'm going to do with it. jayk, what's a parcel hole? |

I would put 3 different colored encrusting monti's on it, then prune them as they grow so that they cover it in a way that will look like an easter egg.

OK, you want creative.
It's not egg shaped, it's potato shaped. Drill holls for eyes, nose, mouth, hat, arms and feet. You may not have to drill holes as it looks pretty pocked. Buy a Mister Potato Head kit and you can change hom around every so often. You could even get some yellow or green star polyps growing on him for his hair, maybe some Zoas for a beard and/or mustache. Maybe a piece of cabbage leather on each side for ears, a couple of Rics for eyes... What potential... |

Keep it where it is as an island.
Cover it with like 10 different small 2-3 polyp frags of colorful zoanthids and see what happens as they grow!

The rock has so much character, I would hate to cover it too much. A single bonsai-esque acro, or gorgonian is all I would do. Maybe lay it on its side first. Whatever you like is best though.

sslak, Thanks for the reply, Covering with zoas is my wifes favorite choice I think, we may end up doing this.
noahm, Thanks, cool idea, guess I could not cover it too much and just wait until it finishes being covered in purple coralline. Not sure if I would do an Acro though, I'm new to the hobby and reading about Acro's makes me think they are for more advanced reefers? moogoo, lol, thanks, would be kinda cool, but I am no carver and I think the rock would just fall apart. jeff, thanks, maybe it's a potato, like someone said before, or maybe a fossilized dino egg... |

I'd try to make it into something that resembles a pineapple.
Find some sort of SPS to put on the top that is green, and then find some yellow-ish zoa's that could look like the scales of a pineapple! |

I have a maze brain on a piece of lr that has a round bump on it and let it grow...looks pretty cool.Get one like mine ( brown/greenish-yellow) and let it cover it up like a pineapple with some green zoo's for the top.

Loving the Mr. Potato head idea. couple SPS for arms, some yellow pollups for hair, mushrooms for eyes..... lot's of possibilities. Definitely agree that it's unique and should do something special.

T-dub, thanks for the reply, I was really entertaining the Mr. Potato Head idea but after thinking about it I realize it will not work long term and don't want to have to keep it pruned all the time.
Eric, thanks, the maze brain idea is cool, and I was going to use it for the top of Mr. Potato Head's head. Don't think I'm going to do it now though. I'm really thinking now that I'm going to do something like plyle02 mentioned. I'm in no rush though, so it will probably be a while before I actually implement anything with this egg/potato rock. |
