missing firefish pls help!

I have a 90 gal with a pair of percs, a pair of firefish, a royal dotty back and a manderine goby.

2 weeks ago I added a yellow wrasse and since then my 2 firefish have gone missing. at first I thought they were just hiding but I'm no longer sure thats the case as they were quite social. I have egg crate over my tank and overflow so they didnt jump anything.

everything I've read about yellow wrasse say they are a peaceful fish but since that's the only change is there a chance the he's the cause of the missing firefish?

Thanks
Darryl

What are your water params? Any larger inverts? Any known hitchhikers?

Check the floor around your tank. Firefish can fit through eggcrate easily, and will jump when the smallest thing scares them.

Yes, egg crate is worthless at keeping firefish (and others) in the tank. But the higher probability is that they are intimidated; this may have caused them to jump or hide.

your tank might as well be open top / open overflow as far as egg crate goes for keeping fire fish from jumping

check your overflow and sump and all around the tank (inside and out)

That will not keep firefish, jawfish, flasher wrasses, etc. in the tank.

Actually, your puppy may beat me as well. I know my 164 lb dog can beat me at anything.

Luckily, I was watching the tank when a firefish made the leap up and thru the eggcrate.

I put my wife on tank watch while I ran to Lowes and bought screening.

Screening with 1/4 inch holes works great!

Oh wow.... I didn't realize that eggcrate was so ineffective. I will have to give a good look around and see if i can find them somewhere they're not supposed to be.

I'll keep you posted!

Thanks all

okay.... now this is getting weird! My yellow wrasse is now missing. I've checked the entire system around the tank, the stand, the sump and the overflow they're just vanishing! The only oppertunistic feeders I have are my blue leg hermits and my emerald crabs but they've never gone after any fish before. I've also been watching my ammonia and there hasn't been any spikes in that either.

this is getting TOO weird!

Well, emerald crabs can take fish if they are hungry. Of course other wrasses can also get through eggcrate.
