LED types. which should be used?

So i've been reading about LED lighting and one question is still unanswered. What's the difference between SMD (surface mount diode) and SSL (Solid state lighting). Both are high power LED's but i do not know which is the better one although i think its the SSL. I am looking to set up a DIY LED fixture and unless i know which bulbs to get and why i'm pretty much stuck!! Thanks in advance

Search LED right here an dozens of DIY threads pop up. some guys are making units as good as anything out there.
