I used krylon fusion black spray paint on the back outside of the tank and it worked great. Keep in mind I did this outdoors when it was warm out. Not sure I would want to paint it indoors with spray paint

Make sure you tape everything off including the top opening of the tank. I have had over spray land on the inside of the tank and spent hours with a razor blade.

I used Rustoleum black enamel brushed on and it covered very thick in one coat. Didn't want to spray paint inside with the fumes, though not sure the enamel was any better...

goto Home Depot. Buy a thin sheet of acrylic. Cut it to your size tank. Paint it black or what ever color you want. Then buy a roll of velcro to hold it on the tank. That way if you ever need to see behind the tank, you can just pull it off.
