Smile nemosworld 40G BREEDER build.

1/29/2011

This will ba a barebottom sps Dominated tank.

Now that my 110 is sold and gone, and i am taking the 75 offline this week. I thought i would start my new build thread.

tank will be barebottom with a 20 long sump and a 20 long refugium.
mostlikely 65-70 gallons of water volume.
DSB bed in the fuge with LR and macro's.
Looking for good filther feeders for this area as well.
the tank is drilled for a calflow overflow system.
which will drain into the sump and the return will be split to the refuge and some reactors. maybe not the reactors. i will raise the fuge above the sump and drill one hole with a bulkhead to drain back to the sump.
the stand is being built right now and is 39x24x48
list of equipment.
mp10
tunze nano stream
diy dual stage calcium reactor
acrylic box for autotopoff
reefkeeper 1, jr coming soon
milwaukee ph monitor
Ai sol white
nextreef reactor
tlf reactor
1/10 hp chiller
sicce syncra 3.5 return pump
bubblemagus nac 6 skimmer

fuge (temp LR and mangrove home)

please forgive me if it seems like i am talking to myself, i am cutting and pasting from my local club site.

Had a productive weekend:
1:build new overflow box
2:attached to tank
3: prepped and painted the back and bottom black.

here are the pics:

after it was painted:

Nice and reflective, and i did not even use gloss.

okay, okay, okay, I know the overflow is not perfectly centered. i spent more time maing sure it was leveled. maybe it was meant to be.
the calk i used was ge #2 black, did not have bio-seal on it and it was for door and windows, no mildew resistence. drys quick and does not have that strong amonia smell.

also got news, the stand should be ready by thurs. (came early)
arrived tonight, 2/1/2011

It's Here:

one flaw, he mis-understood me when i gave him the dimensions, he made it 2ft like i ask, but it was suppose to be two feet inside the stand.

but he did make me a shelf for the second tank to sit on top. but that won't work as it leaves no room for my skimmer.
so my solution was to bring the sump to the front, raise the shelf and the put the fuge on top.

originally, both tanks was suppose to be side to side, sump in front, fuge in back raised enough to have a bulkhead in the fuge to plumb back to the sump. good thing the stand is tall. not his fault an error on my part.
I still love the stand, and i will make it work. more pics:

canopy which will be suspended over the tank:

hinges:

not pictured is the box he will design to cover the chiller and possibly my calcium reactor. I think i will just put clear varnish on it. looks real good as it is.

Light sits 30 inches from the bottom. single ai sol white

superman monti:

Summary:
40 breeder from aqueon
20 gal long fuge
20 gallon long sump
bubble magus nac 5 skimmer
quiet one 3000 return pump, which feeds the DT, fuge, nextreef reactor ( got rid of the sicce, mine was too loud)
Nextreef reactor with carbon
TLF reactor with carbon as well, had cloudy water, will replace with gac in the future.
lighting is done by a single aquaillumination sol white.
I have a 1/10 chiller i have to connect in the next week or two.
also a dual chamber calcium reactor i need to setup, but won't run till the demand for it comes.

Livestock:
2 pink/red margin fairy wrasse
1 firefish
2 blue eyed cardinals
one tricolor fairy wrasse

inverts:
one emerald crab
1 mexican turbo snail
1 turbo snail

tank has been running for ruffly 1.5 months, system is ran by a reefkeeper 1
the AI'S are ran by it's own controller.
the stand was custom built by a excellent cabinet worker here in houston.

i am using the beananimal drain system and love it.

I want to get a pair of rhomboids to finnish off the stocking list. and get some diff macro algae, like ulva, shaving tree, and seagrass. going to create a seperate chamber for the chaeto once i get the other macro's so it don't choke them out. right now i have tons of pods in the sandbed and on the live rocks in the fuge, you can see them out and about any time of day.

I did remove the filter sock from the fuge drain to allow the pods to go into the DT. assuming they don't get sucked up into the skimmer, maybe i'll route the drain to the return section, now that i think about it.

any hope you guys like!

That one AI unit lights your tank better than I would have expected. Looks good and I like your taste in equipment! Looking to go more high tech on my next tank

I only have the blue's at 100 percent, and the whites are like 50 percent if i remember correctly. I do plan to add either 2 par 38's or diy 12 leds 6 on each side of the Ai's for more coverage in the corners. plan on putting a clam in the right corner.

Thanks for looking!

as always, I am a huge fan of 40g breeder reefs as that is what i started with last year... and yours in no exception... well thought out, love the fuge and the powerhead in there for some circulation within your fuge... and so far your stock list rocks... very well done

I still have to get the calcium reactor online. i added some sps, but i am losing some.
mostly because i think the coraline algae is out competing it for calcium and alk.
in another month my bottom will be covered with coraline alge.

so i'm not adding anymore for now.
I have 2 pink margin wrasse
1 bartlett anthias
2 purple firefish
1 firefish
1 mexican turbo
a few neriths
and tons of pods in the fuge. Had to remove the powerhead, kept sucking the chaeto in it's impeller.

this weekend i plan to seal off the garage door. this is were my tank is and i also do photograpy in there, so the room should be a lot cooler.
i also have to find a sheet metal worker to fab me up a vent for my chiller, i want the exhaust to vent outside, i already have two vents in the side wall of the garage.

and i plan to suppliment the Ai's with either diy leds for the corners or 2 par 38's.
if i don't then i will just put lps and zoas in the corners where the par are low.

what do you guys think?

nemo - Nice build. I'm planning a 40gb now w/bean overflow. I was wondering what size pipe did you use? how far from the top of the tank did you make your overflow holes. Thanks.

I like the build. Very nice. But that has got to be the most colorful skimmer ive ever seen. The plastic parts are blue and red. Pretty sweet looking.

The overflow holes were drilled a 1/4 inch from the trim, i used one inch bulkheads with a reducer to attach the sanitary tee which only comes in 1.5 size. I then reduced it to a 1 inch pipe to the sump. If you have to make any bends and turns, use something flexible, this way you wont get any noise. I basically followed the instructions except for the plumbing going down. I have a buddy who did it eaxactly like bean instructed and there is no diff in noise in both our systems, both a silent. You can only run so much flow on a 40b unless you have a huge sump.
