Anemone hitchhiker ID
Tonight I went night watching on my tank with a flashlight, and while looking around for the normal creepy crawlies and other fun stuff I see this anemone on the back side of one of my rocks. I have no idea what he is or how long he's been there, never seen him before. He was fully opened up, so I was able to get a good look at him. Foot is white, and his tons of tentacles that are white/clear with the little ball ends of the tips are a bright green color. I flipped my lights on to try to get a pic and he did not like that at all and retracted up. I don't know if it's because he doesn't like light or if it was just the initial shock of going to from darkness to full lighting, the tank had been dark for about 1.5 hours. Although I'm thinking he isn't big into light as he in a pretty shaded place almost at the bottom of my tank, plus I have never noticed him until now. Fully open he was about 1.5 inches across. I know it's really annoying when someone ask for an ID without pics, but I can't seem to get one that's not just a blur because of his location. I've googled away and can't find anything that looks like it. Anyone have any ideas?
I do not think it's an Aiptasia or Majano, as it doesn't look like any I have seen, but I guess I could be wrong. It's actually pretty cool looking, so I don't really want to kill it unless it's a going cause issues. But unless I can be sure it's harmless I may not have a choice. |

Thanks! I think he must be some sorta species of those guys. He looks just like the Orange Ball anemones except his tips are a bright greenish-yellow color rather than orange.
I can actually move the rock he is on, so I may rotate it some where I can get a better view of him and hopefully also get a pic. How big of a danger are these to their tank mates? I see that anything they catch is pretty much toast. I'd like to keep him unless he does something bad. He is going to be pretty hard to target feed unless I move him or his rock. Can these survive ok on just catching pods? I have several vermetid snails in my tank that are all right next to him, could I be so lucky that he may reach over a make snacks out of them? ![]() |
