Old Stealth heater ok?
With all of the recent discussion about stealth heaters exploding and taking out tanks, I have become quite concerned about my own heater. I have had the same "old style" stealth heater in my tank for 2 years. This is the kind with the little red knob on the top. I keep it such that the top and the cord remain out of the tank, however I am still concerned about this heater. Should I replace this heater with something else? if so what brand is reliable for in display use? Irregardless I plan on purchasing a Ranco controller for added peace of mind. Thanks for the comments!

I have two of those and replaced mine. the non-pros, 100w and up, are also on the recall list. Better be safe than sorry.

There was an older thread that showed pics of pros and non pros that had exploded. My advice (FWIW) is to replace them all.

I would replace it. I had three of the older versions in use, same model as yours. Coincidentally, one went bad on me last week. It did not explode, or cause any damage to my aquarium or home. It just kept tripping the circuit on my breaker. Unplugged them all and threw them in the trash. Then this week I saw the recall. DOH!
I ran to the LFS and bought Aqueon heaters as a temporary replacement since that is what they had in stock, other than the Stealth heaters. I plan on getting a titanium heater for the long run. I have a Finnex titanium heater that is connected to my DA controller and it has been working consistently for me. But a heater is always working consistently until it isn't. |

As the others have said, replace it. Its not worth risking how ever many thousands of $ worth of livestock due to a piece of equipment that has an active recall out on it.

Thanks for the comments all. I read through a lot of the recall information but was unclear whether the new models were the dangerous ones. I will be replacing this heater as soon as I can. I have read good and bad comments about Finnex titanium and the Jaeger heaters. Any comments as to what would be a good choice for a heater? Thanks again!

get rid of them and never use them again. I got rid of them and broke down and got a titanium heater with thermostat. 90.00 but not really that much and I love it. 500w and its really small. I had one of these in every tank in my house. and always recommend them to my friends. Im using aqueon now i really like those, but titanium in my 90 reef

You could get a ticket!!

My Jager consistently runs about 2 degrees below the set temperature. It's set for 81 and runs at 78.7ish. 200w heater for a 29g tank so it's not underpowered and does turn off.
