It is likely not having enough light for Crocea or Maxima and is too small for other Tridacnic species.

its just the stock biocube right out of the box, but its one of the newer designs. dude at my lfs said theyre deepwater clams and light shouldnt be an issue. im more worried about keeping up with the calcium it would draw. this is my first saltwater tank on my own. my mom always had some when i was a kid. i know the basics, ive just never had to dose anything like that myself before. as far as space goes by the time it gets big enough to be a problem i should have some roomier accommodations for him by then. i couldnt tell you what kind they are but the one with my eye on it is only about three inches long and is orange with green swirls in the mantle, i figure ill try him for $25 first and see how it goes.

That would probably be a Deresa and will out grow that tank in a matter of months. Also they are not deep water clams and while they are less light demanding they still need a lot more than what that stock BioCube has to offer. Also if you have never dosed anything I would not go for it. They soak up a lot of calcium and ALK. Sounds like it is just destined to die. And the Dude at the LFS is wrong light will be an issue.

They get big really fast. i got a Derasa from Petco 1.5 inches 3/2010. It is now just over 6 inches less than 1 year later.

very doubtful for any clam to live under that lighting. my derasas have tripled in 18 months.
