Kenny's Gurgle Buster
I was setting up a tank at work, when I realized I didn't have a stand pipe. My buddy lived nearby and had several plumbing pieces so we went to his house. As I was sorting through it - on a whim - I decided to add a 45 degree fitting to 1" PVC [pic below]. On the other end, 1" PVC was cut to length [desired water height in the overflow] and at a 45 degree angle to create an oblong opening. My tank at work is silent. I have also done this on my home tank; silent.
Two other things that you will need to make your tank silent; 1) must have a ball valve on your return line so you can make some fine tuning adjustments, 2) be patient, what my not be totally silent in the beginning, will be after the stand pipe slimes up a bit. The only other concern, is the possibility for fish or snails to get into the overflow and clog it. My overflows have lids, so I don't have to worry about that part of the equation. In the end, if it doesn't work for you - then you have about 10 mins; and 2 bucks into it. Have fun!
