Hight salinty in LFS

Hello everyone,

THis weekend i bought few new fish and tested water it the bag with my refractometer. the result 1.032! i keep my tank at 1.025. Why is there such a huge difference?? Does high salinty keeps fish more alive for a short period of time? Next day i woke up and two firefish were gone. Havent seem them since.

thanks

Firefish and pretty much most fishes are known to hide when first introduced to a new tank, so i think they are just hiding, I actually had one that lived with my goby in a burrow that it made. As far as high salinity goes it should have not been a problem as long as you adjusted them slowly to the salinity of your tank.

yes i did adjusted them slowly. i was just wondering why they are using such a high salinity? it has to ba a reason for it.

Maybe they don't know they have such a high salinity?

My thinking too, there is really no benefit in having such high salinity. So it might be an issue that they haven't tested their water.

Honestly I would consider that pretty lucky! I actually don't buy fish from a local fish store because they keep their salinity so low. Fish can adjust much easier going down in salinity then up. I think the store keeps it around 1.014 and my salinity is at 35ppt (1.026).

maybe, but if you invest so much money i would think that they would care more about it. its a private LFS not a petce etc.

Yeah your situation is pretty odd to be honest, most LFS keep their salinity low to save costs. The only thing I can think of is they haven't topped off their tank(s) in a while or they are using a hydrometer to measure which is rarely accurate.

+1 you should prob check your refractometer. The error could be on your side.
