Honestly, the less strange substances your tank is exposed to, the better. Salt water dissolves things quite aggressively. Plastic is ok, but there are things sold for freshwater applications that start coming apart when sunk in salt water. I have had some freshwater decorations start coming apart in FRESH water, which is no little annoying.
This is nothing, of course, to do with a simple hose falling off, and I imagine what you had working was simply a submersible pump doing its thing, no harm done. But honestly, for your marine tank, I would urge you do simply as many pounds of live rock and of live sand as you have gallons in the system, and that will give you quite a lot of things crawling and moving about your tank. Is your tank cycled yet?
