Because you want only 1st hand experiences, I guess I won't be able to help. I have never personally kept one for a number of good reasons. Despite 20+ years in the hobby, including 10+ in a lfs, doing setup & maintenance on numerous show tanks that have had clown tangs in them.
Oh well

I currently have a juvenile in a 92g corner. He is about 2.5-3 inches and hasn't shown any aggression towards any one. His tank mates are a Purple tang, pair of clowns, mystery wrasse, fire fish and 4 chromis. I purchased him thinking I had my purple tang sold, but the buyer backed out. The purple flashes him from time to time, but I have never witnessed contact and he looks has healthy and beautiful as the day I got him. He was very quick to take prepared food. He eats from an algae clip, mysis shrimp and formula one pellets. I have had him for about 2 months now and he is one of my favorite fish. Before I am attacked I under stand this tank will be to small for him in the long run and that they become much more aggressive as they age. Once I feel that he has out grown that tank I will either upgrade or trade him in. I prefer the former, but funding may make that impossible.

Sorry if I came off a little harsh. It's been a tough few weeks for me. I don't consider how a fish acts at a lfs a very good indication of how it will act in it's new home, and because I would visit the customers tanks only every couple weeks (or less, depending on who drew the maintenance card that week, lol), it is difficult to say how they were on a day to day basis.
That being said - IME, (1 1/2 hand?) as juvis, they can be ok, but NEED lots of swimming room. They are very active and will bother more timid fish - not necessarily pick on them, just be out and about so much that others tend to hide more. As adults, unless in a tank with even more aggressive fish (think clown or undulated trigger, larger eels, etc) they will be the dominant fish. Once again, IMO, and IME, not really a very good choice for the average reef tank.

My experience (and the basis of it) are similar to billdogg's. OK, but not tremendously hardy, as juveniles. Eventually that switch flips in the brain, and they get vicious. They're right up there with sohals and clown triggers with the potential to literally wipe out a tank overnight. I've seen it happen in tanks as large as 500g (though I have seen them successfully kept in tanks that large).

I have a clown tang about 4 inches and he is great with the other 5 tangs and all my other fish in my tank!! They are very hard to acclimatize. I lost the first one I had bought. I would recommend trying to find one for sale from another reefer! At least this way you will have a better chance of keeping him alive! This is just my opinion! Good luck

Mine is a bit of a bully, swims like crazy all day long, eats like a champ, and likes to bite my hand when it's in the tank. I've had it for two years, my buddy I got it from had it for a year or two as well. It's grown well, perhaps a 1/2"-1" per year, and is currently 5-6".
It's currently in a 180 mixed reef with a purple, yellow, blue and sailfin tang as well as a wrasse, couple of clowns, gobies, cardinals and angels. It's hard to really pick one bully of the tank, for me it's a toss between my clown tang, cinnamon clown, or yellow tang.... The fish is busy, so it needs a good deal of room to swim, open rock structures and a good deal of open water are required, otherwise it may start knocking corals of the rock for more swimming room. It's a very pretty fish, but make sure to add it last. |
