Questions
Hello everyone, I just signed up for the site! Now I have a few questions. I think a messed up on a new fish. I recently had put in a quarter sized "Regal/Hippo Tang" in my 20 gallon tank. While in my tank, I saw it had little white spots on it (Possibly ich, even though it looked fine from the LFS) I researched the fish deeper and found that it needed at least 75 gallons of swimming space. I was thinking of getting a new tank (120 gallons) in the summer. I figured it would do "fine" in my 20 until I upgraded. I contacted my LFS and they said it was fine but I should upgrade ASAP. I want some of your opinions (Particularly how to effectively cure the Ich) The fish itself seems to be doing fine, it doesnt seem to have difficulty breathing and IS socializing with the other fish.
I have a Reef Tank with a Bubble Tip Anemone, Two Ocellaris Clowns, A 6 Line Wrasse, A few other corals, Xenias, Mushrooms, and the Hippo Tang I was talking about. I don't want to stress it or harm it, so I'd appreciate responses. Thanks. |

You do need to upgrade your tank. gallons is way too small for that fish. If your fish has ich you will need a quarantine tank to put all your fish in. You can find more info on QT, tank sizes for tags, and how to cure ich in the sticky's on the top of the forum. I would take the fish back to the LFS until you have an adequate home for it.

Thanks for the advice! I'm looking into tanks at the moment. I might get one by the next month at latest. I'll focus on the ich for now.

Welcome to the forums. Do lots and lots of reading, especially the sticky on Ich at the top of this forum. Take all your fish out to treat them in quarantine and let your display tank be without fish for 6-8 weeks. It will allow you to cure the fish and let the Ich in the tank die off because it does not have a host to feed off of.

The best advice I can give is to always research before buying. I have been there as well as others. It will save you a big headache. Please do not take this the wrong way, I am just trying to help.

Yes, thanks .
I do not have a QT, however, my dad has a 10 gallon tank that has been running freshwater for the past few months, should I use that tank? And what kind of medication (if any) do you recommend? |

Read the sticky on ICH at the top. It offers several different options to treat fish with ich. I know the 2 major ones are copper or hyposalinity. Go over them and decide which one is best for you.

Well, the tank you bought would make a great qt (with no sand or rock and an air driven pump) but what you need now is a hospital tank. x2 on read-that-sticky. it'll tell you how to save your fish accurately and in detail---forgive my no-caps. my shift key broke.

The Tang is eating properly and is more confident to go out of it's hiding space, I also have a 8 Gallon Mixing tub for my salt mixing, and a 5 gallon bucket for my FW top offs, would they be all right as substitutes for QT and Hospital tanks? I also performed a FW dip for 3 minutes when I first bought it.
