Question Oceanic 120 vs 110 RR

I am looking to p/u a used RR Oceanic tank. I found a 120 which is 48x24x24 and a 110 which is 60x18x24. Which would u recomend for a nice reef setup?

i think this is a matter of preference but I'd pick the 4' 120 because I like wider tanks because i think it is easier to aquascape them and i feel it gives the fish more room to swim. This is just opinion though as either size can be made into a nice reef setup.

Depending on what type of lights you are thinking about doing, you might want to throw them into the decision as well for 4' vs 5'.

plus one with this...I have seen many more nice 120s than 110s, if you're going to get a five foot tank than why not a six for 125 or something?

Setting up a new 120 reef.....

Thanks for the input I agree. I am currently running a 55 reef. NO ROOM. So I made the decision to look at 75 and quickly went to 90 and feel that 120 4x2x2 is the right dimensions for a nice reef with keeping management realistic. I further wanted to ask opinion on equipment for this tank ie: skimmer from my 55 is a 3.5 x 21 hang off the back, yes/no? Sump size- I want to make a refugium within it and I was contemplating an algae scrubber DIY. Lights I have MH/Actinic 4 ft but I am thinking of getting 2 Aqua illumination SOL Blues LED. And lastly I wanted to put 2 koralia 1400 evolutions,on a timer/wavemaker? ANY AND ALL OPINIONS WELCOMED, I REALLY WANT TO MAKE THIS A SHOWCASE IN MY HOME.

If you're getting a RR tank, you won'd need a HOB skimmer since you can hide that in the sump. Although I guess you can hang it on the sump if you wanted. Chances are you'll need to upgrade regardless though. If the skimmer was adequate for a 55, if will be way underpowered for a 120+sump.

The only other thing to consider as far as the tank size is the fish that you'll plan on keeping down the road once it is mature. If you're interested in tangs, the 5 foot gives a few more options and more comfort to some of the smaller species. Check out the sticky in this forum for some good minimum guidelines on tang tank sizes/dimensions.

the 120 since width is 2 feet vs. 18 inches for the 110.

if the other was 5 x 2 x 2 then that one.

Also I have never read a 120 owner being unhappy with the dimensions. They seem to be one of those "perfect" aquariums for the hobby.

4X2X2 is a great size for a reef. 6" front to back doesn't sound like a big difference but once you've aquascaped and stocked it you'll be glad you went with the deeper tank. The 4' length fits into a lot of places that a 5' tank won't. That's the route I'd go.

As far as equipment, a lot of that is going to depend on what your plans are for the tank. If you're going to do a fish only tank then your equipment requirements aren't going to be as critical as they would be if you wanted to do an SPS reef. Give us an idea of where you want to go with this tank. Also, an idea of what kind of budget you're working with.

Mike

My 110 fits the space where I have it better than 120 would.

try to decide by which tank fits your space better. long and narrow or short and wide. try to envision how each would look set up.

The Oceanic tech tanks also have Saphire glass on the front panel. A standard 110 likely does not. The overflow for the tank is also a nice low profile 4 inches in the center of the tank, not that obtrusive. Plus as I have figured out on my 120 tech, it is very very easy to Herbie or even do a modified Bean overflow on because it has 4 holes already drilled into it.

I am definately doing a reef. Any input on the koralia 1400 evolutions (a pair) for this tank and are they compatble with a wave maker?
