margarita snails vs Red Slime
I hear that margarita snails are good vs red slime?
My DT has no red slime however my HOB refugium is a breading ground for the stuff. People say that I'm lucky not to have it growing the DT however it still annoying as it spreads over my cheato. The root cause is waterflow, The waterflow in the HOB refugium is slow so red slime thrives in there. I did not want to use any chemicals as the DT is fine. Was going to throw is a few snails to see if they can have 3 course meal from it. |

It's ok for it to be there---hurting nothing, and will only spread to your main tank if conditions are right up there. The margaritas should not be sold for warm-water tanks: they die. The main cause of red slime, which is not an algae, but a bacteria, is something your fuge can't be without: light. I would suggest a change of light for the fuge. I use a 6500 ordinary CFL bulb in a clipon shop light fixture, and don't have a problem. If you want to know more about the stuff, poke the blue number under my avatar and look for the post on Algae [it isn't, but most think it is, so I put it there.]

Thx sk8r,
I understand, I never actually knew it was not classed as an algea though. The main tank is perfect, I just do the lights out method for the 3 days 1 day ants and that keep the DT tank under control. The light I have over the fuge is a CPR AquaFuge Light 1624 running at 24W daylight PC bulb. 16"L x 4.3"W Its raised up by about 5" from the water level. ( only done this a few days ago) Would this be too powerful then? I'm trying to keep the fuge light on for longer actually as my cheato was doing so well when it was on for 8 to 9 hours. I'm increasing this to around 15 to 18 hours now. |
