filter in overfly

Wow ! I consider myself pretty technical, I can fly an airplane, but this saltwater thing...complicated...I have a lot of questions. Thanks in advance...

I have a 29 gallon tank, 10 gallon sump, with maybe 50 lbs live rock and a skimmer. I don't have any real mechanical filtration to catch particulate stuff other than the skimmer. Should I put some sort of pad in the overflow box ? Is this a risk that the filter could clog ? I bought a setup that did not come with any filter. I see two types, flat pads and cylindrical hollow-on-the inside pads. Any thoughts/suggestions would be most welcome !

There is nothing wrong with using either type - as long as you clean them out frequently. (every few days). When dirty, they tend to become nitrate factories. Lots of people instead use a filter sock in the sump - have a few on hand and change them often. Others, like myself, use nothing.

If you want to run lps or softie corals, don't have filter medium---for one thing, you have to change it weekly and it's a pita; for another, you'll take what the corals eat.

I don't even run a skimmer but my tank is all softies, zoas and shrooms - they kinda like it that way.
