Algae Bloom in 12" cube

I recently had an outbreak of bubble algae and some hair algae. I have done a couple water changes and tested the water but nothing is working. The phosphates are at 0, nitrites 0, ammonia 0 and nitrates around 5ppm. I only feed every other day. It has been setup for about 6 months and this is the first time I have had this problem. I also use rodi water for top off and oceanic salt mix.

Thanks for any help,
T.C.

Sounds like your doing everything right, it is just new tank syndrome. You will have algae, and diatom blooms for like the next 5 mo.

Thanks for the quick reply. I scrubbed the bubble algae off in a separate container with a tooth brush and rinsed it in fresh saltwater and found some green corraline algae underneath, so I guess I will just have to get a few more snails for now.

It is difficult to maintain params in the smaller tanks as well, and a credit to you that it has only just happened, keep up the good work, regular water changes with nutrient free water and quality salt will keep the tank in top condition.

Are you running a filter? I have an aquaclear 70 on my 12" cube and run a phosphate filter media pad in it. I started getting hair algae after it was set up for a year. Added the phosphate pad and the algae was gone in about a month. I do weekly waterchanges and change the pad every couple of weeks.

I have a modded aquaclear 70 that I put in about a month ago. I just need to find a light for it so I can put chaeto in it. I also do weekly water changes of about 1 gallon.

The light that comes with the JBJ Picotope works perfectly on that filter. Put the phosphate pad in and you're golden!
