Running an Aquaclear + More
I am currently running an AC70 power filter on my tank with just activated carbon in it. Should I put anything else in the filter like the sponge or biological filtration media that came with it? I have the skimmer and LR doing most of the filtration but can I get more benefits from the AC?
Also, I am having really bad algae breakouts since my Anemone got minced by my powerhead about a week ago. I have done 2 water changes this week plus added the AC with Carbon. When will the algae stop? Oh ya here are tank parameters Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 10-20 due to my anemone getting minced Temp 79 Salinity 1.025 Ph dont know yet, will test tomorrow Last edited by MachMe; 03/26/2011 at 11:39 PM. Get some filter floss. They will trap all the dirt floating in your tank.
What algae bloom are you talking about? |

How long has your tank been setup? New tanks will always experience algae blooms.

Around 2 months. The LR and Live sand came from a tank that had been running for 5-10 years.

I throw polyfiber in mine and change it out every few days.

You should have some room in the media tray for some phosphate removal media of some sort.....ie. ExtraxPhos, Phosban, Phoslock, generic GFO, etc....

Polyfiber or filterfloss capture floating particles. Phosban reduces phosphates.

Carbon removes chlorine, smoke and aerosol spray contaminants.
Improves water clarity, color and odor Phosban removes phosphate that algae feeds on. |

Polyfiber is the stuff they put into pillows you can get it at walmart. I picked up some filter fier same stuff at petco like $3 a bag i just stuff a bunch in and dump it 3 days later. Carbon also helps with the chemical warfare between some corals. I keep alot of leathers in my mixed reef and they are known to give off alot of toxins.
