A guy I do Biz with gave me some free LR . Well went pick it up today and it looks pretty nasty. So is there a good way to clean it ? I really do not wanna add it to my tank the way it look. Guess i'm scared it would crash my tank. if you seen his tank you would under stand why I'm worried about just adding it to my tank.... Thanks Eric

Do you have like a 29 gal. you can use for a holding tank? I would scrub it with a toothbrush that is only for aquarium use. Also if the guys tank is kind of "iffy" I definitely would not put it in my Display Tank. Put it in a holding tank and test for Ammonia and all that to see if anything dead is rotting on it. Good Luck!

It sounded like I said to scrub the tank with a toothbrush. LOL I would get another tank and use it for the liverock holding tank, and after you use it for that you can use it for a quarantine tank. I like a 29 gal for this purpose, it is a good size for almost any fish you can buy.

Go to Target or Wal-Mart and get a big plastic bin large enough to hold all of it. Put enough saltwater in there to cover the LR, give each piece a good swishing when you put it in. Let it set in darkness for a few days (topping off with RO/DI daily) with a powerhead for aeration and repeat as needed until you feel the rock is safe.
Being able to submerge the rock in a glass tank is nice so can inspect it well for aptasias and such so you can remove them before you put the rock in your DT. Unless they are big pieces a cheap 5.5 gallon tank will work. Good luck!

NO!
If you wash/rinse it anything other than salt/tank water it will kill everything on it and you might as well get dry rock.

Glad to help.
Free live rock is worth a little effort.
