Fuge w/o macroalgae

I've given up on trying to grow macroalgae and now realize it's because I don't have the sufficient nutrients. So I hae a 29g fuge with sand and live rock supporting my 125g DT.
Can I grow pods without having macroalgae?????
Jim

Yes, you could have LR rubble and dose phyto or similar.
Most tanks will eventually produce enough nutrients to grow chaeto.

Absolutely you can get pods in a non-macro refugium. I have been researching crypitic sponge refugium where you grow spongea to assist in the biological filtration of the water column. If you are heck bent on not using macro I would look into a product called Sponge Power by Korallen-Zucht. It is pricey but could be worth your while. http://www.marinedepot.com/Korallen_...ADSACS-vi.html

I'll see if I can dig up a link to the research on sponge refugiums.

Thanks for the info. I gave up on various types of algae only because of low nutrients. If I get the nutrients higher than I'll try again. I'm guessing the phyto for pods would be in the small micron size ( 1u).
As for sponges, that sounds like a good project to consider. Any info or link would be great.

i'm at the point where i don't harvest much macro and hopefully it continues to just support itself...as said just add some rubble for a place for pods to grow and hide or cryptic would be a good idea
