How annoying is a pistol shrimps "snap"?
I'd like to get a pistol shrimp to pair up with my yellow watchman goby.
I was wondering if they snap so much that the sound becomes annoying?? Is it a constant snap? |

Mine only snaps once or twice a day. Sometimes it just a small pop. If something gets too close to it's burrow it's a loud snap. Not annoying at all. Mine is a tiger pistol and it's about 1 1/2" or so.

The one I have only snaps a few times a week and has never woke me up or caused any other problem because of it. If anything I look forward to hearing it.

Sand storm is a bigger issue than the snap IMO.. I love the little bugger but he makes a mess.

My tank is in my home office (I'm a tele-commuter). The very few snaps I hear from my candy stripe pistol are not a problem at all, and I spend a lot of time on conference calls.

I have one in my small cube in my office. Honestly, I chuckle every time I hear it because I know it probably scared the $&*# out of something approaching its den.

I find it enjoyable, I know he is alive and clicking even though I don't see him often

I made up my mind not to get one because I did not want to hear it...
then a tiger pistol hitched on a coral and got in. Now I have the LFS ordering me a yellow watchman goby to pair up with him. I almost never see him in his hole in a rock but I hear him a few times a day and he is quiet enough that I occassionaly have to ask myself if it really was him or something else. |

Acorns hit my roof from the oak tree and make more noise than my pistol. It's not like the thing is just clicking away. If there's any other noise in the house you won't hear the click at all. It's more one of those things that once in a while (maybe once or twice a week) you go, "what was that, oh yeah the pistol shrimp." And then thats the end of it.

My pistol shrimp, is the headlining act in my tank. Everyone who has seen the tank loves watching the little dozer pushing sand out of his cave. He gets more attention than the fish! As far as the snapping, I rarely hear it, My skimmer makes more noise.

My tank is in my office at work. I hear my pistol shrimp every day and I have to say it's a little annoying. I probably wouldn't mind it if I got to see him every now and then but I think I've only seen him once since I put him in.
