Tunze Osmolator and kalk?
Anyone have suggestions for adding a kalk system to my ATO?
My tank is a 250 and evaporates about 2.5 gallons a day. |

I would say a kalk reactor hooked to a litermeter, tried the tunse osmolator and just did not work well, kept whiting out my tank with kalk using tunse as an ato.

Perfect for me i have a 270g mixed reef. I use a little plastic light diffuser so the pump doesn't rest in the kalk residue at the bottom of my food grade 22g bin. I use the kalk plus 2 I understand some of the reef chemists don't like the plus 2 but I've been using it for 8 months and it's solid. I don't even use my doser anymore I just buffer my asw.

Iv'e thought about the Tunze kalk dispenser but never knew anyone that used it. How is the kalk stirred?

The pump pressure forces ATO water through a jet at the base of the unit and stirs the kalk and dispenses it with your ato demand. Gotta be a bit careful with it, though, because your top-off demand fluctuates with temp/humidity/time of year. I only use 1/2 tsp every day, even though I evaporate 1.5 gallons a day - its cool cause you can vary the potency of the kalk water going in. Its easier to dial in.

That's what I was afraid of. I really need something more hands free without adding more daily chores.
I'm thinking I may go with a kalk stirrer run with a dosing pump controlled via my Apex. I might need to make the lime water more saturated than I would like in order to not get in the way of the ATO but i have yet to find another soloution without loosing my bullet proof Tunze. |

I use a DIY kalk "reactor" that the Tunze pump pushes the top off water through. It's a 2" PVC pipe with endcaps and in and out 1/4" lines. The pressure from the pump fills the reactor and forces the kalk out the other -- very similar to the expensive versions.
The water jetting into the reactor stirs up the kalk. I've been using it for ~2 years with no issues. Paul |

I used one for years and it worked ok. I switched to a kalk reactor and found it to be a big improvement.
