I had one on a frag tank and my nephew has one on his 125g. Both where and are silent IMO. Never had to set anything either. I would do one of theirs again, if I don't go with a reef ready.

I have the 1500gph kit and I would put the sound level at around a 5. I hear water trickling, but I really think it is more due to my plumbing being a straight down as well as being corrugated tubing. That being said, the fans on my lights are louder.

if you order one ask them to send you some enkamat with the kit and it will be virtually silent

I'd give it a 7 out of 10 with 10 being LOUD. Have tried all the "Quick Fixes" but still have to close the door to my office to sleep at night and the office is across the hall from my bedroom.

I think it also has to do with what return pump you have

I have had a 1500 and the 700 on different tanks. They can be quiet for the most part it just takes some playing around to get it there. Right now Im working on the 700 its on a new tank thats going through the cycle right now so I have time to work with to get it quiet. But on a scale I would have to put it after some fine tuning a 3 out of 10 on the sound.

Mine was a 7 out of 10 until the enkamat. Now its about 3 out of 10.
I do have an undersized return pump (around 500gph) which I think makes it worse then if I had a pump that did 1200gph. The slower water movement seems to splash around in the box causing an annoying sound. I also have the 90 degree elbow then a drop of 6 feet to my sump in the basement. I still love it so much better then anything else out there.

I have the 700 and I give it a 8 out of 10 as far as being loud. My return pump will push 630gph back to the tank. I have it split between 2 flare nozzles so It doesn't seem like that much. It's very loud and I get lots of burping. I have no clue how to fix it. I was reading on the glass holes forum about the enkmat thing but what do you do with it?

On my 50 gallon breeder, I have the 700 paired with a mag 12 throttled back and it is very quiet. I can't hear it over the skimmer or tv. I never had to make any adjustments.

With the enkamat, I cut it into 2" x 4" strips. On the 1500 kit I have two channels on the left and right side of the overflow. I took two layers of the strips I cut and put it into the each channel of the overflow. It seems to work well because most of my noise is inside the actual box and the enkamat just breaks up the path of the water going down.
It's near silent now.

I'm small potatoes compared the prior responses, but here goes: I have their Super-Nano kit (with a strip of enkamat in it) and push about 300gph through it. I have the top for the overflow box, and have taken out their "patented baffle".
Pretty darn quiet. My return pump (Mag 3) is louder than my overflow/drain.

So if I have a 1200 return, would I be better off getting the 1700 model for less noise?

The 3000 kit would be an overkill and probably super noisy.

I have the 3000 kit (2 - 2" bulkheads) on my 150. I use a Dart for the return. It also runs my BRS reactors and feeds the refugium (a separate 120g tank) The overflow itself is pretty much silent. Maybe a 2 or 3 out of 10. The sump and fuge are in a different room, so any noise there is cut by the wall.
FWIW - if you are going to drill, drill big.
