Vortech MP10 - glass thickness

I'm interested in purchasing the MP10 for my new 45 gal rimless tank. However, the manufacturer specs say that 3/8'' is the max glass thickness and I have .5'' thick glass. I've sent the question to the manufacturer but haven't gotten a response yet so I'm asking you all.

I know there's a reason for setting the max thickness but.... anyone use this pump on thicker glass successfully? Consequences?

I ran one on 3/8" glass but I wouldn't go any thicker than that

I don't know the long term consequences but I know it will work on thicker glass just as well, try typing this question into google I found a few threads on other forums with helpful info on this subject.

I run mine on 3/8" glass on my 125. I would definitely not try it on thicker glass. It will likely not attach through the pane of glass and if it does will probably keep falling off during use.

If the glass is too thick what will happen is as the power increases on the pump, the vibration will cause the wet side to fall. I've seen this happen on my glass when I was using the rubber spacer.

So if the glass is super thick you run the risk.

I have seen a ton of threads about this. Lots of people have gotten away with using them on 1/2" glass. Even Ecotech has responded on the matter. They stand by their recommendation but have seen quite a few people use them on thicker glass without issue.

I would say you the run the risk of it not working but I think you are safe.

what happens if you don't use the ruber spacer? is it a requirement?

You only use the rubber spacer on thinner glass. On thicker glass such as 1/3" you do not use a rubber spacer.

Has anyone heard of another model that's in between the MP10 and MP40? I keep seeing some info on MP20 but wasn't sure if that model was discontinued.

I have a MP10ES on 1/2 inch and it stays put. No spinning etc. However, it is very easy to remove the dry side and I wouldnt recommend it if you have kids running around etc.

Awesome pumps.. I'm running 2 MP10ES's on my 45 gallon Tech tank with the Starfire glass with no problems. You'll definitely want to use the zipties and brackets that prevent the driver from falling to the floor if you happen to bump it. I have 3 MP10's and the 3rd is in my little 12 gallon Aquapod. You'll never go back

I have an MP10 on my 90g which is 5/8'' glass and it works just fine and has been working fine for a long time. Yes the force needed to detach it will be lower but it will still function.

After searching a few more threads outside of reefcentral, I keep getting mixed reviews on some people using the MP10 on thicker than the recommended 3/8'' glass. I really want to push the "buy me" button but don't want to have to return it immediately.

How did this work out for you. I bought a MP10 and I'm putting it on acrylic that is just over 3/8. Did you have any problems?

Nope no problems. I've had 2 now on my tank that has .5" glass without any problems.

what percent/strength would you say you are running them at?

Currently running it at 100%. The only real problem I've noticed is that it's much easier to bump the dry side off the wet side magnet due to being on thicker glass. So if you have kids or its in a place that could easily be bumped, it could fall off fairly often.
