I wouldn't do it unless you are going to QT but that goes for anywhere you order fish. The nice thing about ordering from PETCO online is that the fish never touch any PETCO holding tanks. The fish are shipped directly from the wholesaler to your door. From what I understand PETCO does use some pretty reputable wholesalers.

dealing with petco isnt that bad its there quality of livestock in there tanks... but if it is coming from the wholesaler then that may help with that issue. I used to return stuff all the time there with no issues at all. fish may be a different story though

I have order through them and it was a good experince, all fish came in healthy. Always qt no mater where you buy your fish..always. The customer service was on par with L.A. I ordered a red sea sailfin but was sent a regular sailfin, so they gave me a choice to credit my credit card or send out the correct fish.

I have ordered from petco a few times and all their livestock comes in very healthy. I have never had a problem with them except for a few DOAs which they refunded right away without a problem.
They always came in fat and healthy IME. The only thing I don't like about them is that they are very slow in emailing you the tracking number so you are never sure if you will get the shipment in 2 days or 3 days. I usually order on Tuesday in case they ship out on thursday for Friday.
