Need Help ID on 2 hitchhikers
So a couple weeks ago i added about 22 lbs of cured live rock to my 30 gallon fowlr (will get coral eventually). I left for the weekend and when I came back I noticed a lot of purple stuff growing everywhere. Is this coraline algae?
Also on one of my live rocks I noticed 2 possible Hitchhikers: The first one is kind of hard to see but it looks like a transparent purple tube like tentacles. Possible anemone? The second one: Looks like small pinkish red puffballs. Water Parameters: Salinity: 1.022 Temp: 76-79 about Ammonia: 0 ppm Nitrite: 0 ppm Nitrate: 20 ppm ( maybe a little less) Phosphates: No idea Calcium: 400-450 Please help! |

an anenome, tube like structure on newly added live rock...consider it a pest like majano or aptasia, either way, I would pull the piece of rock and get rid of it. The other, purple slime I'd say is cyano or some form similar that will eventually go away, but I'd be worried about that anenome type item.

in the first pic.. it actually looks like you have coralline algae AND cyano growing..
yes cyano is bad.. its cyanobacteria. what kind of tank is this? how long been running? what lights? how often wc? you should test for phos, alk and pH.. are you running powerheads? what kind of filtration? sorry.. lots of questions.. but need to know to help you further Edit: if you plan on owning corals.. you will need to bring your salinity up to 1.024 to 1.026

the hob would prob work best on your 29 imo u should get maybe another powerhead or two for more flow it sounds like its not enough if your alk is really at 1.7 your coraline will not grow or very minimal it needs it to grow its its food source as well as calcium and the amount or watt the light is really has little meaning what is important is the correct temperature of light you should run 10000k with a actinic bulb to get a decent par and recreate the natural light in the ocean ie get better growth and a healthier tank

New live rock carries in decaying material boosting nutrients. Cyanobactria love extra phosphate. It doesn't hurt fish but may smother other growth on live rock including coraline and corals. Manage phosphate to low levels via granulated ferric oxide or a similar adsorber, reduced feeding and cleaning rock surfaces via siphoning or brushing and it will wane.
