Quarantine Additives

What kind of additives do you recommend to use in my quarantine tank? Anything I should stay away from? How long do I quarantine and well... whats the point?

The point is not to infect your DT with a parasite/infection.

I'd keep on hand:

PraziPro
Cupramine
Maracyn II

If you ever plan on having clowns, if you can find some QuICK Cure that's good for Brooklynella and Ick.

Yeah have what Midflux suggested on hand, Cupramine or some copper treatment especially. I don't treat my quarantine tank unless a fish is actually sick. You want to put new fish in that tank for at least a couple weeks and watch them close to make sure ich or something else doesn't appear.

Or you use it to pull one (or all) of your fish out to be treated for the many fun diseases in this hobby.

Generally,that's the rule.
But,for tangs I do a fresh water dip and then treat with Kordons Rid-Ich+ for 3 days.
Tank and fish are parasite free and happy.

Some people do freshwater or meth blue dips, some like to run copper to be on the safe side. I say why stress the fish if they are healthy? They have enough to adjust to. Watch them for 2-3 weeks and if no signs of disease, then no need to treat. Just my opinion though. I believe Ich would have to appear in 2-3 weeks or the fish doesn't have it. Just watch them frequently and closely as some diseases like ich are not always visible (Ich cycles on and off the fish). Lots of good reading on this site on the marine diseases...don't take my word. Read up and form your own opinion.

For just about all my fish, I like to do a prophylactic treatment consisting of copper and prazi-pro. My reasoning behind it is that there is a 99% chance that every fish you're going to buy from a LFS or even a local hobbyist has been in a tank that has a parasite infestation.

Most fish come from collectors in the islands, suppliers in LA, and the LFS, the chances are quite slim for each one of those entities to set up dedicated QT's and treat when necessary. It's too expensive, and too time consuming for it to be worth their time and money.

That said, I'm not one to let a $30 fish bring a parasite into my display which can potentially destroy the $1500 in fish that are in there. If the treatment is too much for the fish and they perish, I get over it. It's disheartening at times, but it's the sad truth.

Some people do treat all incoming fish. I don't think it's a great idea, because you really don't know if you're treating anything, much less the right thing, or just unnecessarily exposing your animals to a bunch of medications.

I do the same.
Also if you plan on using copper, make sure you use a compatible test kit from the same manufacture as the copper.

I fresh water dip and dose Prazi-Pro in QT prophylactically (if the fish have been eating well for about a week).

Personally I do a hypo treatment on any new fish, and in the process allow at least 12 weeks of acclimation and observation.

Then again, I haven't brought home any new fish for several yrs now, partly becuase the above QT/treatment is such a PITA.

Check out the "Fish Disease & Treatment" forum for info how to properly freshwater dip. The stickies may be overwhelming at first, but are a great resource. The freshwater dip process itself is relatively simple, but I don't want to accidentally leave something critical out, when you can refer to that forum with a more concise explanation.
