400 watt MH
How high should 400 watt MH be placed over my 280 gallon mix reef?

I think it depends on what type of reflector you are using. I have a Lumen bright wide reflector that I keep about 16 inches off the water. In my previous tank in which I did not have a reflector, I kept the light about 12 inches above the water. Put the light much closer than that and you'll probably start heating up your water pretty quickly.
