What would happen if my ammonia was really this high?

I think my API ammonia test is bad. I haven't tested for ammonia in about a year. Today it pegged the scale at 8.0 ppm. Would I see signs? I am trying to figure out why my red and green Monti are dying.

Kh 8.0
Ph 8.2
Ca 420
Salinity 1.25
Nitrate 10
Phos 0

My nitrates have actually gone down. They hover between 10 and 20 with no problems.

Well if your ammonia is anywhere near 1.0 your tank is in peril.

2.0 is the point where you expect fish to start dying.

I just don't understand why the Monti is dying after 2 years of growing like a weed. Everything else it doing just fine.
