small holes in the sand, visible through side of the tank glass

I can see small holes about 3mm in diameter from the side of the glass, what are they? And why they re there? Hope it's not something bad...

Thanks in advance

probably the places where tiny bristleworms have traveled through. I get this as well. Nothing to worry about.

I think it's products of respiration by the bacteria present in the sand. I have them too.

Part of the denitrafication process. Do not disturb.

Is your sand bed pretty new? The first 6 weeks I noticed these small holes/bubbles in the sand. My understanding is that they're products of the denitrification process as well. Best not to disturb the sand bed, as you may get release of toxic gases.

I think you re right, I did poke it a little with wooden stick and bubbles coming up to surface. Alright I won't touch it again.

My sand bed is about 7 weeks old now, the one that has holes is my refugium sand bed. The main tank sand bed do have holes but I havent touched those.

Jakarta, Indonesia's beach sand may be a little cleaner than what we are used too.

lol I'm sure most the worlds beaches gotta be cleaner than ours lol, america's filthy but I was thinking more along the lines of the actual role a beach plays in cleaning the oceans. Not saying I wouldn't do it If I were near a beach

Not really it's filthy. Trust me. I went away to a small inhabited island 1 hour away by boat to get the sands and live rocks plus some small bonus like hermit crabs, spoted sea slugs, fish if I am lucky to catch em, anemone (there are some nice carpet anemon and others too), some small corals. But due to my tank young age, I don't take those...just sand, live rocks, few slugs, few snails and a couple hermits. Next month I am gonna get an anemone or 2.

Buying from LFS is so much cheaper than going there and take em (boat, petrol cost)but it's more fun that way plus I can appreciate their habitat by mimicking what they used to live.

Other areas are still good yes, especially those in rural areas but Jakarta...no way.

I know this is an older thread, but I'm also new and just noticed this in my tank. Is there any way to know if they're air bubbles or worm holes? I know it doesn't really matter, I'm just curious lol
