Minimalist 125 Gallon Reef

The tank is 6 foot in length but isnt very deep so it is hard to gain that natural feel with the depth, so I chose a minimalist layout and created 3 seperate islands that arch so that it created a "cave" look with each island. The fish swim very natural with this layout and I have plenty of room so that the corals can grow out of control

New camera soon for reef shots!

I will be cleaning all of the coraline algae off soon to help that clean look of a "minimalist" tank. Sorry the photos are small, I hope to gain access to a better camera soon so I can show the true look of this system!

Coralife compact lights 4x96 watt bulbs, two actinic and two 10k daytime bulbs.
Protein skimmer- None
Refugium houses 30 pounds of live sand ( about 2 inches deep ) with algae and a huge UV sterilizer with the return from the UV going into a bag of carbon. There is around 15 pounds of live rock found in the sump as well.
I use a Little giant return pump with two koralia 1400 evolution pumps to circulate the water.
I dose alk, mag and calcium with my water changes manually when needed. I test before adding anything and dose accordingly to my readings each time. The tank houses mostly softies and lps with leathers throughout with the addition of one monti cap.
7 chromis, one yellow tang along side his partner in crime the clown fish with starfish, crabs, snails & other cool inverts

Scape looks great! Everything looks really healthy as well. How long have you had that sponge? A very nice piece.

Awesome, I also run skimmerless with great success on my 130. I have 9 different photosynthetic gorganians in there, gives the tank a very natural look IMO. Been thinking about getting a nice sponge like that as well for some added color, though their success rate in captivity is not very high. What's your feeding regimen for the tank? Had any troubles with unwanted algae?

I actually feed mysis shrimp instead of frozen brine as the nutritional value is immensely more As far as my routine goes I feed frozen food (one cube) as I have a very light fish load every other day and spectrum optimum flakes on the days I skip frozen. I throw in a coral food every couple of weeks as I keep that light because I believe in letting the fish waste feed my corals/sponges more than relying on me doing it ! I think the success of keeping a sponge isn't really what we as hobbiest do in our daily routines but more along the lines of buying a healthy one in the beginning from our lfs! Also when buying one ensure that the sponge itself has never been exposed to air and when you get it home ensure you drown the bag that it is in and remove it underwater making sure it never is exposed to air! If the sponge does meet air it will die in weeks guaranteed as the air will basically cut off food supply to the cells that the sponge uses to feed.

As far as unwanted algae I rarely have a problem, I have had a spot or two of hair algae pop up but not last. If you do run into the problem with hair algae raise your magnesium up to about 1600 and this will slowly kill it off. I didn't do a water change on this system for the first 6 months of it being setup so that beneficial bacteria could really take hold on the system and sustain long term success without problems. I preform a 12% water change about once a month now.

Yes they do and I love them! Koralia just released a new wave maker system that you can use with the evolution series that I am looking to get very soon too

It was released June 1st and it is called the Koralia smart wave and is retailing at the low price of $59.95, very affordable compared to other wave maker pumps It has a feed mode, pulse mode from 5 seconds to up to 6 hours. Its water proof and can run 8 plus pumps at a time so you can always add pumps to it as your tank grows! I will try and find a website and post it here soon Lynn.
