Different looking live rock

I acquired a reef setup from a family member that joined the marines and needed to get rid of everything. The tank was in pretty bad shape and I've been in the process of cleaning everything before setting it back up.

I noticed that the live rock doesnt look like the rock I've had in previous tanks. Its smoother than what I'm accustomed to seeing and I'm afraid of what he may have used for live rock. Should I be concerned and could he have used rock that could be bad for the tank? I would include pictures but it's currently in a trash can with some flow while I get everything else ready. Thanks!

Pictures will help. You don't want anything that what affect water chemistry the wrong way. Any rock that gets introduced in the tank eventually becomes live rock it all depends if you like the look or not.

I've read that certain rocks shouldn't be used in aquariums.

Jacob,

You want rock that is calcium based. Take a piece out, dry it off, then drip some vinegar on it. If it fizzes, you're in good shape (for the most part).

Is it holey rock? If so, it's not what you want. A pic would be helpful

I currently have the rock in its original water in a trash can with water moving through it. Are there any tests I can run now to see if it has anything harmful in it? (Besides nitrates and stuff like that because I know they're up just from the environment they came from and I haven't cleaned them yet.)

thanks!
