How to feed fish question??
I know its maybe stupid but how should I feed the fish tank? Currently im feeding twice a day but thats less my question then what to do with the pump/overflow??
I thaw out the food before feeding but if i leave on my flow to my sump a good amount of it gets sucked into my mechanical filter and just seems like it would be a nitrate factory of nutrients if I left it. What I have been doing is turning off my sump pump and closing the ball valve on my overflow to stop the flow through the tank, I then feed them wait about 5 mins for them to eat mostly all of the food and turn the pump and overflow back on. Is this what I should be doing or should I just pour in the food and let them eat what they can and rinse the mechanical filter after every feeding???

What you're doing is just fine....keeping fresh rotting food out of a mechanical filter is always a good thing. You could go one step further, and feed the fish by hand with tongs, it helps limit overfeeding, and makes the fish more personable.

How much food do you put in the tank at one time? I mix a variety of foods (flake, frozen and freeze dried) in a glass and feed it to the tank with a turkey baster. I feed small amounts over a 10 or 15 minute period. It's rare that any food makes it to the overflow as the fish really go after it. If they don't finish a dose quickly, I don't add any more.
