Protien skimmer for a 36 gal bow front
Ok, so I got everything setup and am going great thru my second weel of a cycle. I'm starting to research on protien skimmers and was going to do diy, but am looking at prices if I decide to buy instead. What's recommended for a 36 gal with 15 gal sump and adding 15 gallon refuge...

My bad, shoot for a reef octopus then. Lol I'll look for a number for ya. However if you do a sump let it hang below, it really works great.

You have time. Just try and get on thats a little larger then recommened.
All your coral and little critters like some waste to feed on so over skimming is possible. wait untill you have a few fish. Your LR and sand bed are your best bio filters as long as there is good steady water flow... |

Also just water change a lot until you get one in. It will allow you to truly see what you need. And by a lot I mean a gallon a day, you'll only be out 30 at the end of the month???
The fuge should handle a lot the the skimmer would have normally done. Plus saves electric?

So all you have for water movement is the return from the sump. I would think you need another powerhead for better water circulation..

I have the return outlet in the back left corner blowing to the middle of the tank. I have the overflow box on the right back side. The tank is 30" long. When I put food or whatever in....it gets into the current and moves around pretty good...doesn't seem to be any spot that doesn't have water movement... What would yall suggest? |

I run a Reef Octopus NW150 on my 29g with 20g sump... Today is the first day I have actually had it up and running since finishing my sump build. Its rated for up to 150 gallons, so its MORE then enough for my tank. It runs about $200 or so (i got it as a mistake through the LFS, they brought in the wrong one so i paid less due to there error). I'd recommend it to anyone, its easy to use/adjust and was already producing a light brown skimmate, i can't wait until it breaks in.

The NW110 is the skimmer that I wanted orginally, i really felt no need for the 150... if it wasent for the LFS screwing up and sending the wrong skimmer from the warehouse to the store I would be using a 110 like i wanted. cant complain though, got it for dirt cheap (store credit, 30% off coupon and then the discount for them screwing up). leaves a good amoutn of room for upgrading in the future also.
Check out aquacave.com, they had some in stock last time i checked... just something to consider, for $20 you can step up to the 150, never hurts to have something bigger |
