Question Protien skimmer for a 36 gal bow front

Ok, so I got everything setup and am going great thru my second weel of a cycle. I'm starting to research on protien skimmers and was going to do diy, but am looking at prices if I decide to buy instead. What's recommended for a 36 gal with 15 gal sump and adding 15 gallon refuge...

Scott.

Cool...I can't get to the classifieds yet... Gotta get to the 50 posts and 3 months.. I'll look around and see what I can find. Not sure if there's a benefit to putting one in before the tank is fully cycled...

My bad, shoot for a reef octopus then. Lol I'll look for a number for ya. However if you do a sump let it hang below, it really works great.

You have time. Just try and get on thats a little larger then recommened.

All your coral and little critters like some waste to feed on so over skimming is possible. wait untill you have a few fish.

Your LR and sand bed are your best bio filters as long as there is good steady water flow...

Also just water change a lot until you get one in. It will allow you to truly see what you need. And by a lot I mean a gallon a day, you'll only be out 30 at the end of the month???
The fuge should handle a lot the the skimmer would have normally done. Plus saves electric?

I have 40ish pounds of live rock and a ton of sand...however, I'll still be adding some sand to the refuge and probably stick a live rock or 2 in there. I'm also bout to ditch the bioballs and toss some live rock in there. I went up a size on the pump and it's doing its job very well. It doesn't seem that I have any dead spots...

I haven't done any water changes yet, but I know I need to do one soon. I need to get my water tested. I'm thinking of putting a T with a valve on my return to make waterchanges easier. I was gonna shoot for 5 gallons a week...

So all you have for water movement is the return from the sump. I would think you need another powerhead for better water circulation..

I have the return outlet in the back left corner blowing to the middle of the tank. I have the overflow box on the right back side. The tank is 30" long. When I put food or whatever in....it gets into the current and moves around pretty good...doesn't seem to be any spot that doesn't have water movement... What would yall suggest?

That's great to hear...I used to have freshwater back n the day and siphoning that sucks. I'm glad it's easier in saltwater...that's what we got sand dwellers and clean up crews for...

I run a Reef Octopus NW150 on my 29g with 20g sump... Today is the first day I have actually had it up and running since finishing my sump build. Its rated for up to 150 gallons, so its MORE then enough for my tank. It runs about $200 or so (i got it as a mistake through the LFS, they brought in the wrong one so i paid less due to there error). I'd recommend it to anyone, its easy to use/adjust and was already producing a light brown skimmate, i can't wait until it breaks in.

The NW110 is the skimmer that I wanted orginally, i really felt no need for the 150... if it wasent for the LFS screwing up and sending the wrong skimmer from the warehouse to the store I would be using a 110 like i wanted. cant complain though, got it for dirt cheap (store credit, 30% off coupon and then the discount for them screwing up). leaves a good amoutn of room for upgrading in the future also.

Check out aquacave.com, they had some in stock last time i checked... just something to consider, for $20 you can step up to the 150, never hurts to have something bigger
