DIY - Box Jellyfish!

This past Wednesday night (08/10/11), close to midnight, I went for a stroll at the beach. I had in hand, a small, Tupperware container, ready to collect bits of seaweed. I do this every so often to supply my nano with loads of microbial life.

There were a lot of jellyfish out that night, especially the iridescent jellies. Anyway, long story short, I happened to see a much larger jelly than the smaller ones I was used to seeing - Moons, Cannonballs, etc. I scooped it up, and its tentacles clung tightly against my cup; it wouldn't let go. I almost decided to bring it home and study it, but I thought, "Eh, it's too big, and would possibly die on the drive home." I informed my girlfriend on the description of it the next day, and we found out from detailed photos online that it was a Box Jellyfish! She was upset, but I found it humorous to have played with such a deadly animal, and nearly gotten myself stung just trying to make it swim into my Tupperware cup.

If any of you are curious to where I am located, this was off the coast of Georgia/South Carolina border, United States. We do not normally have such a dangerous ocean dwelling invertebrate, but apparently, they've been migrating and staying here, due to the weather.

The box jellyfish found on the east coast is less venomous than those found in australia and japan, but I'm sure you wouldn't want to get stung by it. I'd stay away from playing with any jellyfish in general.
