Red face Cycle week 3 water test results

Well, just had our week 3 water test...

amm 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 5-10
ph 8
phos .5
sg 1.021

Looks like the cycle is almost complete!!

I didn't see a "green" phase yet though. We are just starting to see brown algae around. So far it's on a couple rocks and in the overflow box inside the tank. Funny thing we had a starfish hitchhike into the tank...he found the overflow box and looks to be in the promise land...lol. I suppose the brown algae is normal during the cycle??

Yes, any type of algae or bacteria bloom is common for a newly cycled tank.

I suppose you could start using some type of PO4 remover (macro algae, gfo.. something like that)... Just slowly add live stock to allow the bacteria to catch up with the bioload, or you can have a mini-cycle.

I added a couple zoanthids and a star polyp...they are doing great (3 days in)... I also finished up my refuge and added some chaeto but I need more. The LFS was out. I got about a quarter sized peice for free...

I know my tank has not gone through a green cycle yet And it has been cycleing for over a month now. My test results are just like yours, and I have alot of brown as well. I also just ordered my first fish. So it looks like we are in the same boat on this one.

I hear ya! I have a starfish that has bout doubled in size in there...he's sooo happy the algae is growing...lol. I know it's a part of the cycle...just making sure that I don't need to do something before it gets outta hand...

Did you start out with liverock or deadrock? I just set up my 1st tank with dead rock. I have used live rock or no rock in the past (FO). I seeded it with a chunk of meat and then a week later some live rock from other tanks. The dry rock (Pukani BRS) is SOOOOO white compared to my live rock which is covered in green coraline that when my green cycle starts I won't be able to miss it lol.

I started out with 40 lbs of live rock in a 36 gal tank. I had the bio balls in my 15 gal sump...then removed them for live rock rubble. I just added a 15 gal refuge and will put a couple pieces of live rock and chaeto in it. So far everything is running fine. Unfortunately I started out with Damsels as per the LFS. That's how I started the cycle. I still have the 3 damsels and haven't lost any. I also had a clean up crew from the beginning. I just this week put a couple zoanthids, a star polyp and a sea serpent in...they are doing good as well. I'm just worried how this algae bloom will go...
