Algae Questions..with pics
Hey reefers!
i have recently set up my second marine tank (it has only just finished cycling last week). Obviously during the cycle here was an obvious algae bloom (walls, rock etc), that was no worries, now that the cycle is complete I borrowed some turbo snails from work (to clean my rock) and I cleaned the glass myself. I do however still have algae growing on my substrate (finer crushed coral rubble -not sand) I was just wondering if you guys think this hair alage will fade out and dissapear on the substrate as the tanks becomes more established or if you think it will be a constant battle, if so, would you reccomend changing to more "sandy" substrate? <- I presume finer substrate would reguce algae growth.... This is my tank... By paul227 at 2011-08-24 By paul227 at 2011-08-24 This is the algae im talking about.. By paul227 at 2011-08-24 |

Let it go a few more weeks or months with nothing in there but a few snails. Keep doing 10-15% water changes and your tank will continue to stabilize and mature and the algae will subside. Keep in mind the cycle in a tank is true cycle and never ends. Best of luck!

What type of water are you using and how long are your lights on?

I use natural sea water, However the their is someone doing daily water quality tests at work on our storage water - and in the rare case that is does contain some nitrites, nitrates, phosphates etc..then I either dose the storage tank to remove them or simply dont water change that day -
as for lights the fitting has a total of 4 24w t5's and a 150w metal halide - they are on as follows.. 12:00 midday - on comes 2 of my 24watt t5's and they stay on util 7:00pm 1:00am on comes my halide - this stays on until 6:00pm then at 7:00, when my two 24 watt t5's turn off, my remaining too 24watters turn on (which are both actinics) they turn off at 9:00pm thanks mate! |

I had crushed coral in my first tank and it was a constant battle keeping crap out of it. Didn't enjoy it very much... if it's not too hard to do and you don't mind, I would think about replacing it early
