I LOVE frog fish/anlgers!!!
They are BY FAR my favorite fish, I am thinking of putting one in my 65 gallon reef since there is nothing in there that they could eat except for maybe my 3 peppermint shrimp but in my experience with them and shrimp in larger tanks with lots of rock is that as long as you keep them well fed and get them onto frozen food they dont bother anyone AND they are super neat to look at these are my other favorites aside from the one you posted this is the red and white frogfish I have ALWAYS loved  Warty frogfish  longlure frogfish

Anyway- the psychadelic angler was discover a few years back and got alot of press then. According to the intial press report Dallas world aquarium had one of these specimens for a while, it didnt do well. I had a diving friend go to ambon just to seek these fish out and take photos- he was there for 2 weeks and never saw the fish. The original description of these fish suggest they are rare and extremely well camouflaged. So finding them will be an issue. If you notice its eye face forward- which suggest is stuffs its body into a hole and the head faces out- it must be impossible to detect So-- lets keep our fingers crossed that they come into the hobby-but important since anglers appears straightforward to breed-maybe they are w/in reach

Good intel Frank, as long as someone gets an m/f pair and can breed them its seems like a possibility and may even help increase population numbers of this obviously scarce but exceedingly beautiful creature. However, if they are that rare in the wild, then im assuming that the idea breeding them might have some sort of a wrench thrown in it at some point?
As for the hairy lobster... it looks like a freaking woolly mammoth, you can’t mess with a woolly mammoth.... haha. |

IIRC, the binomial name of the fish is Histiophryne psychedelica. I suspect this fish may be similar to Hippocampus zebra (zebra seahorse) in that it's super rare, has a very limited range, and as Frank mentioned, hasn't done well at all in captivity. However, when folks see pix of them, they immediately "want" one (I know I do).

not totally true....
antennarid sp has been breed repeatedly in captivity, and everyone is correct, the fry have proven difficult. However today is a different day. There are a wealth of microfoods available today that were NOT available even a few months ago. I think Anternnarids will be cracked soon, they are just too easy to breed. There is a thread on marinebreeder.org w successful breeding and raising of fry of the 3 spot angler Lophichthys sp as they had much larger fry after hatching. So who knows maybe H psychodelica might be an easy one

Anglers and Frogfish are neat.. the trick I think is getting them young.. and well we dont really have a underwater infared scope dohicky device to finding out just how many critters we are missing when we examine a wall.. like Frank said, they likely park their rear in a hole facing outwards in the most obvious spot all the while chuckling watching all these divers going by looking in wierd places. Im guilty, my first devils scorp I saw diving was sitting 2 feet from me staring at me as Im looking around in all the bizzare spots. Detection is the problem, im sure the germans are working on a newfangled Angler detection sonar infared detection unit that also doubles at keeping your fruitloops from getting soggy in the morning. Till they pull through, we are stuck hoping!! we find stuff by running into it.
