Innovative Marine Nano 16

Well I'm looking at jumping back in after about 4 yrs. I want to try a smaller aquarium than my 75 I used to have. I have been looking at a 16 gal nano by Innovative Marine. I think it's pretty new since I haven't found any threads with people that have that set up. I doesn't come with a skimmer, but I just don't see how you can go with out, unless you want to do very frequent water changes. It doesn't look like you would have enough room for it in the back equipment area. Anyway, does anyone have any experience or advice they would like to share, if they have seen this aquarium? I don't have much experience with nanos or AIO systems.

I just placed an order for the 16 gallon with the 14k lights. I ordered it for my roomie in place of rent and will be showing him the ropes of reef keeping. I don't know much about this tank yet but maybe we can learn from each other. I have a red sea skimmer that I will see if it fits when I get it and let you know. I didn't even put my skimmer in my tank (6 gal Truvu) but I also don't have fish in the tank and more than likely wont for a while. Trying to give the LR a chance to recover before fish start picking at it.

That's cool. Thanks for the reply. I guess I am going to go ahead and get this thing. Your right, we will have to keep each other updated. I haven't decided on my skimmer and other parts yet, but I am being careful not to forget anything. I piece milled my old 75 gal together and wish I hadn't. I'm gonna try and do it right this time around, for my own sanity. I was thinking of going with TBS live rock, but still not sure. Just a few details that I need to iron out. Good luck.

Wow, I just googled it and that thing is slick! One thing though, it dosnt look like it has very much depth. I would think that with only 16 gallons if you wanted a reef you would need a cube? But take that with a grain of salt as I am no expert. I can tell you I wish my 125 was a 180 (same dimensions but deeper) actualy I sometimes wish I had a 120 instead of a 125, 120s are 4 feet instead of my 6 foot 125 so you can imagine the added depth to the 120.

I love the look of this tank, Hydor makes a nano skimmer that may fit in one of the slots in the back of the nano 16.

I have a feelin that the width dimension in the back is around 2-2 1/2". It's gonna be a challenge to find a skimmer to fit. Too bad they don't give the dimensions of the back area.

There isn't much depth. But there isn't much depth in these nano tanks anyway.

I will be ordering the TBS Live rock as well. I purchased some from a local store a few years back and it was amazing. GB is right, the tanks are not very deep so depending on what rock is shipped to you may need to break down a few rocks. It works well in my 6 gal and its about the same depth if not an inch or two shorter. As far as skimmers go idk how big of a deal it is to have one unless you have a large bio load. water changes are the way to go.

The specs I found online show a width in the sump area of 2.75". I have seen some skimmers that say thay are 2.75" but do not know if that is too tight for one of these. I just bought one and am looking into internal skimmer options vs. HOB options like the Aqua-C...
